Default Don't know what to do

I have a little female named Gracie...On July 13, I took her to a breeder when she was in heat, not sure that it took, cause I only left her there 24 hours and they did tie several times while she was there....her belly has not grown much but she has gain a little over a pound, she has been acting sluggish and sleeping a lot lately (not her usual hyper self). A few days ago, I got a little male almost 2 years old and he has been after her as if she was in heat, he won't leave her alone, he tries to mount her and she just runs off or sits and won't let him mount her but he won't give up...I have noticed that if she is laying down, he will try to scratch at her belly as if digging for something...I have to separate them if I'm not in the room...Gracie is such a sweetie and she won't snip at him to make him stop. Any advice besides keeping them separate? I know that I need to keep them separated once she has (if she has) her puppies...She's not in heat and little man doesn't understand that, he won't eat and he is just obsessed in following her and trying to mount her! Thanks in advance

I am going to request for the powers that be to move this thread to the breeders section. We have many knowledgeable breeders here who can help.

First and foremost, if you think she is pregnant or any chance of being pregnant, get her to a vet ASAP.

Prayers all goes ok. It's a dangerous world breeding these little ones for those with a world of experience. To try to tackle it without experience can be very hard and life threatening for the mom and pups. I only say this so that you will heed all advice from the well versed responders that you will hear from. It's all about what's best for the pups.

Is the male neutered? If not, that's typical un-neutered male behavior...that's all they think about, they lose their appetite, they roam, they mark, they hump! Him humping your gal is probably a dominance thing since she's not in heat right now...most breeders has their family member or friend take care of their male. Or have a separate room/kennel to keep the females & males separated. Having an intact female in the house together literally drives them cwazzie!

I have taken her to the vet and she wasn't able to confirm whether she was pregnant or not...She did say that if she is pregnant, she shouldn't have any problems giving birth but if in case she is, they will be on standby incase I need to take her in. I do have a belly band on him and keep them in separate crates at night...I am really concerned about the scratching at her belly...he is quite a bit smaller than she is, he is under 4 lbs and as of yesterday she weighed 5 1/2 lbs. she's gained a little over a pound since she was bred a little over 7 weeks ago...I am going to make an appointment for an x-ray asap.

I am a tad concerned about the female. IN the picture you showed of her, her left eye is bulging appears as if it is bulging out of the eye socket. THis might be the result of a very unfortunate camera angle, but if it is that much more prominent than the right eye, a vet visit to examine that eye is very much in order. I suppose it could be merely structural and has been present from her baby days, but that eye doesn't look normal to me in that picture.

Your male must be either trained and or separated from this female to curb the un-wanted behaviour. If she is pregnant his behaviour can un-necessarily cause stress to her system, and that is never good.

If you are going ahead with the pregnancy, then I wish you much success, and hope that your mentor is around to help you through this very important event your females life.

Just wanted to say that I see in your profile that Gracie is just only over a year old - maybe why it's been hard to tell? (not sure but I would have xrays done asap) you really should discuss with the vet and your mentor - my understanding is it's not good to breed them until they are at least two and have gone through several heats - for the safety of your darling beautiful girl - so if she IS pregnant you should figure out what challenges you will face due to her being so young poor pup.

And, I would suggest if you don't have a mentor you get one as soon as you can.

Really? She's just a pup herself. You know, she's still developing...

If she was bred on July 13, then she would be due in the next couple of weeks and if that is the case, IF she is pregnant her belly will begin to grow quite quickly now as the major growth of the puppies is in the last couple of weeks. If she is having a singleton pup, it will not be quite as obvious. Take her for an xray mid week, next week; they will be able to see if she has pups, a good count of how many, and size ratio compared to the birth canal.
Good luck with the whelp (if there is one).......watch Gracie carefully as she is on the smaller side and even if your vet does not foresee problems, there is always that possibility. Keep us posted.

If that part is true and she didn't just make a mistake on her profile, then this is doubly scary. She says in her first post that she took Gracie to a breeder to tie with one of her males and left her there for 24 hours. This breeder should have been aware of her age and is just further proof that, sadly, all breeders are not created equally!

Hopefully it's not a singleton, it's more risk having one than a couple since he has all the space to himself. And I agree the female I have now which is 3 1/2 had a big difference when she was 1, and 2 and now at 3. She was 4 lbs and didnt get taller but she gained 1/2 a pound at 4 1:2lbs full grown now.

Wow she was way too young to be bred. I hope your keeping in contact with your vet in case anything goes wrong. It would be helpful if you could find someone with breeding experience to help you. Whelping small breeds isnt the same as other breeds and there are alot of things that can go bad thats why you have to be ready for anything

I am keeping in contact with my vet...and Gracie has an appointment for an x-ray for Tuesday of next week... She also told me, if I feel more comfortable, when the time comes and she goes into labor, I can take her and she can have her pups in the clinic...they will keep an eye on her and make sure everything goes well...I think after everyone's concerns, that is what I will do...I don't want anything to happen to her, I would never forgive myself! I think from now on, I will leave the breeding up to the pros...not worth the worry. They are both going to be getting fixed, asap!
Oh and her eye is not bulging out...must be the camera angle.

I'm very happy to hear this. Let Gracie be your adorable little pampered pup, not a momma. Breeding is more involved and expensive than many people think, and yes, best left to the pros. Good luck with Gracie's whelp, I sure hope all goes well, and that is a very smart decision to do it at a clinic where there is experienced help.

Be sure to update us, as many of us will be praying for a safe delivery, and especially for little Gracie.
