| HELP with my 5lb pregnant Yorkie. Large litter? Hally is my 5lb Yorkie. My mother in law bought her for me as a wedding gift. She is 2 years old. I bred her with my MIL's 3lb yorkie the first time and Hally had 2 beautiful puppies. My MIL helped educate me and was my breeding mentor. She has bred yorkies for 20 years. Her stud sadly passed away. So I had to find another stud for this breeding. He is a handsome 4lb yorkie. I brought Hally to him 1 time and couldnt make it to go any other days because my sister got into a terrible car accident. I was unsure if she would be pregnant at all. On day 30 I brought her to the vet to be palpated and he confirmed pregnancy. She is now 37 days pregnant and her belly is as big as it was full term with her last litter. She didnt even show last time till 7 weeks. She is only 5 weeks and is big. Could this mean a large litter? Do larger litters usually require a csection? I plan on bringing her to the vet tomorrow for a check up. |

| Have you asked your mother in law for help? You mention she is a seasoned breeder and your mentor. She is the person I would go to if I were you. She has the experience and knowledge and is your mentor even if she wasn't the study's owner.

| Well yes I have. She was the first one I asked. She said that she is showing early. Hers are usually around 6 weeks. She has never had a litter larger than 4. But I thought I could get some insight from other breeders who have had large litters |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I would make sure that when you went for her check up tomorrow that you speak to your vet about what is best for your baby in order to have a safe delivery. For sure she needs an x-ray. Most are done between 6-7 weeks. An x-ray is your only way to determine how many pup there are as well as if they will be small enough to pass through the birth canal successfully. Your vet can determine whether she may need a C-section and if you ask me, it may just be the safest thing for her at this point.

| Yes mam. Thank you. I plan on getting a xray done in a few weeks. Have you ever had a larger litter before? Is it normal for her belly to swell so much this early? |

| Xray on day 56-58.....count babies, check size, check position (position can change before whelping, but if everyone is lined up nose to tail, this is great! If there would be one that is transverse, blocking the birth canal, you would want to re-ray right before they are due...say, day 62......if that puppy is still transverse, you really need to be on your toes! |

| My first yorkie that I owned weighed 5 lbs and she had 4 pups and she had no problem delivering them. You really never know. If your girl does have a large litter you will really have to watch her close for eclampsia. Make sure she gets a calcium supplement after she has her pups.

| I would be more worried about a Section with a smaller litter with very large puppies. I've had a small litter of big babies that created a larger than normal belly. Xray is your best hope for knowing. Do you know the background of the stud or what size he typically throws? Adult size is no indication of his background, as he may just be the smallest in his litter and his background is 9 lbs. with large birth weights. |

| He throws small puppies. One of his son's is 2.5lbs at a year old. and one of the females of that litter is 4lbs. None of them are overly big. I pray its more little babies and not a couple big ones. Thank you all. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Have you ever had a larger litter before? Yes I have / The largest litter we've had was 6. Could this mean a large litter? Yes, it could and it could also mean a smaller litter with larger pups. Do larger litters usually require a C-section? No, a larger litter would not necessarily require a c-session. My gal did very well with my assistance. I was right there the entire time. Quote:
I guess you shall find out when you have the x-ray done.

Common misconception.....it is what is behind the dogs that determines size. But with a seasoned breeder in the family, she has probably shared this with you. | |

| A major problem with a large litter is momma just runs out of steam and looses the energy and strength to continue to effectively push ......have to watch closely for this....if she just wears out and you have a couple of babies left yet, be ready to move to Plan B without hesitation....waiting could cost you the lives of the remaining babies. |

Also I'd like to know the weight of the gal now. How much has she gained from her pre-pregnancy weight of 5lbs to now. I would also weigh her at least weekly.

| We went to the vet this morning. She is 38 days. At 30 days she weighed 5lbs. Now she is is weighing 5 1/2 lbs. Also at 30 days the vet palpated her and said he thinka she feels "several puppies" today he felt her and said he couldnt feel any skull or pelvis. All he could feel was her full bladder. He said she could be going through a false pregnancy. We have a xray set up on day 52 to see if there are pups. Obviously I am still new at this and I want the very best for my dog and pups. I called my mil to ask her about this false pregnancy but she didn't answer. But from what I have researched, its best to palpate around 30 days and after like 32 days it is hard to tell. And at 38 days the bones arent calcified all the way yet right? So wouldnt finding a skull be hard? |
