Default 1st time for all of us

we have a male and female, baby momma is Zoey almost 3 and baby daddy is Zeus almost 1. This is Zoey's 1st and most likely only litter. She is a 6 lb traditional Yorkie and Zeus is about 8-9 lbs and a golden parti. We had no intention of mating them because we bought them as pets NOT for breeding purposes so declined to spend the extra $500 each on papers, and Zeus is what some consider undesirable although I see more show traits in him than I do in her.
Anyway It is entirely my fault she is pregnant. We were keeping them apart and misread mating craze for loneliness and let them play for a few minutes and Zeus was QUICK, he nailed her within 2 minutes of being out of the kennel. They chased each other around, she ran behind the table, he followed her and before I could get to the table he got her.
FF, 2 weeks ago we took her to the vet and he did an ultrasound, he saw 3 puppies from that. He said Ultrasounds aren't as accurate as xrays because it can't see as much. He said so far she looked great, healthy and strong and the puppies didn't look too big. He didn't foresee any complications but wants up to take her in at 56 days for the xray which is the 10th. Ironically he got her around midnight of the 13th of Feb. So maybe it's true love? lol
So from my calculations at 63 days that would make her due the 17th. My human daughter is 20, and is due with her 1st baby the 21st in MS. We are supposed to be there, we are driving, Vet said it's ok to just take Zoey with us. Zoey loves to travel so that isn't what I am worried about. This is what I am worried about.
We are ALL 1st time whelpers. It's Zoey's 1st litter and the 1st time hubs or I have ever done the puppy thing and none of us know a thing about what we are doing. I can't even figure out how to take her temp correctly. Seriously how hard can this be? I keep thinking it can't be right because other than the 1st day I started taking it, it hasn't been over 100 and the 1st day it was 100.3.
I started feeding her a TBS of cottage cheese, then I find out that I wasn't supposed to do that until after the puppies are born not before. Vet said that for the last week to start feeding puppy food but she is such a picky eater I don't even know what to feed her. She prefers high end raw diet so I have been giving her a couple of bites of raw hamburger every few days to hopefully compensate for her lack of appetite lately.
Since neither of us has had anything to do with birthing puppies how will we know if Zoey is in trouble and what do we do if she is? How do we help her have her puppies? Any pointers or help would be most welcome. Thank you in advance!

Lets see your dogs you bought on limited registration so they are not supposed to be bred right. Why didnt you get your male neutered it would have prevented all this. This is why reputable breeders dont trust people to get their dogs spay and neutered and some now do early spay and neuter the pups before they leave their home with the pet owner. You need to find a breeder mentor to help you with whelping questions people on the internet cant guide you through all you need to know on whelping and raising a litter of puppies.

sigh...... we hadn't had him neutered yet because she had already had her heat or we thought she had so we weren't in a huge hurry and we were in the process of switching vets and since the new vet is out of town I was trying to get his contact info only I didn't get it in time. And we weren't told we COULDN'T breed them, we'd just decided NOT to breed them.

I dont believe in accidents. You let them both get to breeding age without spay and neutering and you knew your breeder didnt want them bred. I have a male and a female 1 month apart in age and when he was 6 mos old I had him in to the vet to be neutered so there would be no accidents. Jewels was spayed a month later at 6 months old also. Its called responsible pet ownership

There is so much to learn about whelping pups and caring for the momma and babies that I would not even know where to begin. Your best bet would be to find someone in your area that is familiar with whelping puppies or perhaps your vet can tutor you. There are very many informative thread on YT in the breeding section so you might want to start reading them.

As far as her due date, I have had many litters that were delivered around the 61st day from the first breeding. Some a little earlier and some much later so you really need to watch her closely starting around the 57th day.

Make sure you feed a good quality dog food. I have my breeding females on dry puppy food throughout their whole pregnancy. I add a calcium pill after the pups are born.

I would not be taking her temp this early. For one thing it is not that dependable. Most people start taking the temp when it is getting more near the whelping date.

I hope everything turns out okay.

Welcome to yt. I would make sure your daughter has a vet you can call in case of emergency while your visiting I fed my female puppy food the whole time she was pregnant. It may not be the perfect thing. But now you just have to make it the safest you can for her. And congrats on the new grand baby

Hi Sennie-

Welcome to YT. While I have no advice for whelping as I have no experience in it, I know there are some breeders here that are phenomenal at helping. Im hoping they respond soon. In the meantime please check the library section of this forum. Good luck with everything and I hope you find your time on YT educational and enjoyable!

I'm glad you found this section to post your question.

Time can't be turned back so I hope all responders will focus on getting these pups safely delivered and not attacking the OP as bjh has done. And the others who type faster than I do

There is a time for lessons and there is a time for helping with a current situation. Just sayin'

I agree in a way and you had a nice way of saying it but like I said I dont believe this was an accident. You dont leave a male unneutered long enough to get the female pregnant especially when it wasnt the wishes of the breeder to be bred. Also Ive seen this song and dance before. Thats all Im gonna say on it Im leaving it

I came back because I was worried what I was trying to say wasn't clear. I talk in my head faster than I type sometimes lol

I was just trying to say that we should help this lady help her pup right now. I'm scared if lectures come, when time can't be turned back, she may not stay to get the help she needs.

You all are always so helpful and have taught me a lot! You are appreciated

Alright this will be my last response to rude condescending posters. To make rude comments to someone you know nothing about is pointless and doesn't help my girl or her puppies and honestly life is too short to deal with that. If you aren't in this thread to help please do not respond. Thank you!

To others that actually do care, I welcome any help you can give. The vet told me to start now only so I can get a handle on it so I can tell the difference when her temp changes drastically. I am not sure why he said not to give her puppy food but she does eat a high end food. We feed them Merrick Real Buffalo and sweet potato and a few bites of raw hamburger every few days.

I have been watching youtube video's of yorkie births but since I've never been around a birth I am trying to get as much info as possible. It is pretty incredible.

You have yourself in quite the sticky wicket!!! It has, in my opinion, too far gone to try to cram at least a years worth of educating and mentoring, into a week....Under normal circumstances, I would NEVER suggest you take this first time momma to a strange place to whelp her first litter, surrounded by people that have absolutely NO idea what to expect, what is considered normal, what is a problem, what is the onset of an emergency, etc. Under stressful situations, mommas frequently have been known to eat their babies. Does your female know your vet well? How about the staff there? Is there a competent vet tech there that would be willing to board your female and whel this litter? YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY A FEE FOR THIS SERVICE, BUT that is just part of what this is going to end up costing you. If the answer to the above questions is "no", then you are going to have to take this unfortunate momma with you...I would call your daughter and get the name of a REPUTABLE VET THAT KNOWS SMALL DOGS, ESPECIALLY YORKIES!! When you get to your daughters house, you need to see the vet, let the vet examine the momma, and make arrangements to board the dog with a vet tech there....someone/anyone that can whelp that litter successfully. This is such a sad state of affairs, so unncessary....

From everything Ive read on here she does need puppyfood it is more nutritious and has more vitamins in it than adult food

Yorkiemom, I felt the same way, this is a bit of a pickle but no she doesn't know him, this Vet although he has seen her before but only on a personal level since I shot his family's photo's. He is my Mom's vet and my sister's brother in-law. Zoey doesn't really know the previous vet either because it was a clinic so no personal and rarely the same vet which was 1 of the reason's we changed vets, we wanted a more personal relationship with our vet.

Chachi, the vet said not to give her puppy food yet because he didn't want the puppies to get to big too early. We are supposed to wait until the last week. I will probably start in the next couple of days as soon as I find out what kind to get her just in case she has them earlier than calculated.
