| My Pregnant Yorkie wont stop Jumping - HELP My baby is 2 yrs 6 months and pregnant with her first litter. I have been breeding for 2 years now so her pregnancy is not the issue. It's her JUMPING...I have no clue how to make her stop. She jumps off the couch, off my lap when Im sitting, off the bed, wherever she is, she jumps...She has always been a big jumper and full of energy since I got her and Im allowing her to continue her normal routine BUT I am TRYING to get her to stop jumping so much. Does ANYONE have any suggestions on what I can do to try to stop all this jumping. SO far her pregnancy is going beautiful. She is 28 days into her pregnancy as of today. I'm just worried she will hurt herself or the babies by all this jumping. I know she can cause herself to abort the babies and I'm trying everything to prevent that from happening. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | If you're planning on breeding, this is one of the things you have to be careful of teaching at a young age. I don't think jumping is good for their legs, so I taught Joey to use the steps to get on and off the couch and bed, if he jumps I put him back on the couch and tell him to use the steps, and he is rewarded for doing it correctly. I've also been told, it's best not to sleep with a breeding female. Breeding dogs are working dogs and really should be treated differently than pet dogs for their safety, as well as their pups’ safety.

| Exactly if your going to breed her you have to quit thinking of her as a pet yorkie and look at her as a working yorkie. You may need to pen her up so she jumps and she shouldnt be sleeping in the bed where she can jump. She also needs to get comfortable with her whelping area thats why I suggested an xpen you could put it in there with her. When I gave my cat her whelping area she was so relieved she had a place to go she starting purring real loud so I know they know what we are trying to do for them

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | keep her in the x pen, or crate when she is not with you, jumping during pregnancy is no good. specially while her pregnancy progresses, you don't want her to jump a lot, she can loose the babies.. hugs, |

| Over the years I have had a few females that were very active and they always jumped on and off the furniture and they did just fine. If possible have steps by the furniture that she can use. As she gets further along she will probably slow down. You want to keep her routine as normal as possible and try not to let her get stressed out.

| Thank you all for the responses...I have ramps by the bed and couch that have been there since she was brought home. She uses them sometimes but if she is in a playful mood or real hyper, she will just jump off the couch, bed, etc...I have tried the kennel and putting her in her bedroom to sleep and get use to being there but she cries so hard I cant take it so I go get her. She is so pitiful when she cries and I dont want to stress her out by putting her in a room by herself.....so, she continues to sleep with us and remains our Baby and not a working yorkie...Thats the problem, ALL of them are my babies...my other female sleeps with us to but when she has her babies, she is fine going into their room where the kennel is set up. I have a baby room where momma and babies go and I just hope that Tilly takes to the room as easy as Belle did when she has her babies....Im counting down to day 56 so I can go have x-rays taken and see how many babies we have....She has already gained 7 ounces so hopefully their is 3 or 4 babies and not a couple large ones....Guess we'll find out shortly...Thanks again for the comments!!! |

| I pray all goes well with her. Mine are the same way. Once they have their pups they settle down and don't mind being in a separate room. You definitely don't want to stress her out. Jumping on and off furniture is not as bad as having one in a x-pen or behind a gate where they are jumping up and down over and over trying to get out. How big is your expectant girl?

| That's how I feel about the stress bjh...I dont want her flippen out for a couple hours at a time because she is caged or behind a door...Im trying real hard to keep her off the furniture and when she is in my lap not letting her down until I put her down but she's still finding ways to jump...She is a little over 5 pounds...She has gained 7 ounces so far and is 4 weeks today. |

Excellent advice and RIGHT on target Nancy!! People may get all up in arms about "well MY breeding females are my pets and they are treated no differently than my pets"....In my opinion, you are doing them and the babies a disservice. They most certainly are JUST as loved, just as pampered, just as coddled, just as supervised....but the supervision and guidance and teaching and restrictions and feeding special diets are (SHOULD BE...) all kicked up many more notches. My pets are so spoiled, they stink! They go to bed when they want, they eat, but they also get "a bite" from us when we eat, they go out on the patio and if they feel like flopping down and not exercising in the sun, I dont harrass them to do so... But my breeders, are much more supervised, exercised and restricted, and they are all on individual diets, some get more, some get less, some eat twice daily, some are free fed, they all are governed by charts that are designed to make sure they are getting optimal care that is best for them as working dogs, my athletes, so their babies will be consistantly healthy and sound. They have pre ordained exercise times and they have lounging play times....and they all have mandated nap times! The pets lounge around and nap if and when they feel like it...."breeders" are crated from 1pm to 4pm, crates are covered, lights are off, no toys allowed in crate during this time...and they are all accustomed to this and know what they are expected to do, and all is quiet during that 3 hour span! As far as jumping on and off furniture, jumping is not only bad for the babies after a certain point, it is always bad for any jumping dog's knees/hips and bones in general, and shouldnt be allowed at all, by any small dog. JUST SAY NO!!!!....and then provide alternatives to jumping...steps, ramp, etc. Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 03-23-2013 at 07:33 AM. | |

| Thank you everyone for such good advise...YorkieMom1 I actual do a lot of what you are saying with the exception of the crate. I only have 2 girls and my husband is gone a lot due to being a truck driver, so what we do, we do together. We walk, exercise, play, nap and kiss together. They are both on regimented schedules and we keep to that schedule consistently most days. May have to give up some outside exercise if the weather is rainy or to cold but I have a big house so we have lots of room to play and run inside. I feed my girls Natural Balance because I HATE the grains they use as fillers in some of the other foods. Yes they get bites when me and daddy eats but only if we eat something I'm comfortable giving them. (ie hamburger, chicken, fish, etc) We already have a ramp for the bedroom and my husband is making me one for the living room today. We start our new training (or I should say re-training) today! I like the idea Nancy1999 has about putting them back on the item they jumped off and training them to go down the ramp or stairs. Then of course having those yummy treats ready for 1 form of praise. Followed by lots of kisses. Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond to my post. I appreciate it so much and will definitely train my new babies to use the ramp instead of allowing them to even start with the jumping, PERIOD! I hope you all have a wonderful and Blessed Sunday! |
