| Vet misreads ultrasound - lose 2 puppies I have been breeding yorkies for several years and always do xrays before the due date to determine # of puppies and if there is a large puppy requiring a csection. I noticed our local vet hospital does ultrasounds -- seemed even more accurate. I found a vet who was doing ultrasounds. I took a pregnant yorkie to her recently. She told me my yorkie was having puppies in a few days (even though I told her I thought it was 10 days to 2 weeks away). She also told me that there were 2 puppies and everything looked fine. Well, my girl had her puppies 2 weeks later -- one puppy was so huge that I still can't believe the mom finally delivered her naturally (I had a call in to the vet office saying I had a puppy that wasn't coming out -- but by the time they phoned back I had managed to get this monster puppy out but she was gone -- she had been in the birth canal too long). I couldn't believe the vet had missed the size of this pup. Puppy 2 came out fine. I left mom and her puppy together while I cleaned up. My daughter told me the mom was making strange sounds and I when I checked on her she had delivered a 3rd puppy (I never leave their sides until all puppies are delivered). I always grab the cord and cut it myself so the puppy does not get injured -- well because I was not there, the mom had frantically pulled on the cord and pulled out the puppies intestines. The poor puppy dragged intestines around for over and hour and finally I took her to a vet at 11 at night to put her down -- couldn't watch anymore. This useless ultrasound cost me $150. Putting down the girl cost me $150. Losing the 2 puppies well.....???? My daughter and I were of course an emotional mess by the sight of this puppy and the mom seemed traumatized by the first painful delivery of the "monster puppy". I wrote a letter and sent a picture to the clinic showing the huge size of the puppy and the damage to the other puppy since their sign said "please talk to us rather than complain". Well I got a call back basically saying "why did you send us this letter"? Should vets at all be responsible for messing up the reading of an ultrasound which results in the loss of puppies???? |

| I'm sorry for your loss, but my vet says ultrasounds are not accurate for counting number of puppies. Also, puppies gain most of their weight and size in the last two weeks so there is no way they'd be able to tell size of puppies two weeks before due date. X-rays are better for counting puppies but you can still miss one.

| I should have added, that the vet mentioned b/c she thought it was so close to the due date that she was having trouble seeing the pups and I asked if we should do xrays and she said "no this is fine" -- in all my years of using xrays I have always had accurate puppy counts even when I had a girl that had 6 puppies!!! |

| I am so sorry for your loss. I do not breed my pups, but I have read here that x-rays are "more reliable" than ultrasounds.

| The letter you received was totally callous and insensitive. I would report them to the BBB. I am so sorry to hear about this devastation that was unnecessary. I pray the surviving pup and mommy are doing well and everyone feels better very soon. Please keep us posted on how things are going!

| I was told the interpretation of any test was just an opinion and shouldn't be construed as a fact. I've heard more than one breeder tell me what the vet said they thought a pup count was but that they never relief on that as final and never left a whelping female - some for up to x-number of hours - seems like it was 18 or something. I'm sorry that these poor little puppies had to die like this! Poor, sweet little things. I so hope they didn't suffer terribly. Gosh, it hurts to even read what you wrote about how that one died - so awful!!!

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I had a horrible situation with a bitch, and the ultra sound, the tech told me that she was not pregnant, the vet told me that she as having a fake pregnancy, I took my girl to a repro vet in NYC and there they checked my girl really well and told me it was too early for xrays it was about day 48 or 49, I took her back at day 58 for xrays and she delivered 4 precious puppies, I don't have to tell you that I had not had my girl US any more , I take them for x rays at day 58... I am so sorry for your loss, I knew my girl was pregnant, something the US tech and the young vet told me that is was NOT happening.. sometimes you have to trust your gut and go get a a second opinion.. hugs, |

| I am so sorry for your loss, and the senseless tragic way it all happened. I don't know if vets can be held financially responsible for their mistakes, but I certainly would pursue all ways of making complaints to make others aware of their negligence.

| I always do xrays.....no earlier than day 56....usually day 58. I schedule these xrays shortly after the female is bred and I have counted days.....I do not ever want to deliver babies "blind", just guessing how many could still be in there....ultra sounds are only as good as the doc reading them...and it is a skill....puppies are often missed, shadows counted as babies, etc. With xrays, you can have the film up on the light box and count spines and heads, and take your calipers and measure head/pelvic ring ratio.....I am so sorry you experienced this....really sorry for the tiny soul that was the most innocent in all this, and poor momma, who also could have paid for the vets mistake, with her life. Hope she and her tiny survivor are doing well.... |

| Thanks everyone for your advice and support. Yes I am returning to only doing xrays now. It annoys me that I asked the vet to do an xray (willing to pay even more) to get an accurate reading and she told me not to bother. It was devastating -- I felt bad that my teen daughter witnessed the incident as well (she confided that she walked around in a haze the whole next day it was such a horrible sight). The mom actually took a few days before she would even look after her remaining puppy -- she hid and shook for days. Luckily I had another mom that had a small litter and took the puppy in for a few days. Mom is now obsessively watching her remaining child -- she is 3 weeks old, but mom still won't leave her for more than a few minutes. Yes I am disappointed with the vets office -- I was hoping for some sympathetic words, an explanation.... advice for the future... refund on the ultrasound??? I don't know... something to acknowledge what had happened! |

| I am so sorry for what you, your daughter and your mommy went through. This whole thing makes me sick and I would definitely report the vet to whatever authority is in your state. Also, you can give a review of the vet online. This was just sickening.
