Females are generally not ready to breed until around the 11th day of their heat cycle. Has she been bred before? Please keep your male and female separated. If your male should happen to tie your female when you are not there to assist them then then they could get hurt.

Some females are never receptive to males no matter what time of the heat cycle. I have even heard of some females killing the male.

Perhaps it would be best if you did not let them breed until you are more knowledgeable about breeding. It is a huge responsibility raising a litter of pups.

Please make sure both dogs have had health and genetic testing. Also make sure your female is over 5 pounds.

Have you had both male and female tested for all health and genetic issues?? Are they both AKC? What is their pedigree? Do you have the financial means for all prenatal care as well as finances set aside for a c section if need be? Are you prepared to possibly lose your girl in the event of complications during childbirth? Have you whelped pups before? I could ask a million more questions, but I'll just start with these.

You really shouldn't leave the two dogs alone during the breeding process. Once they are "tied", both (especially the male) are very vulnerable to being hurt should one or the other panic while together. You should always be near in case you need to comfort and/or hold one or both of them still.

Hi and WELCOME to YT. Glad you found us, and hope you stick around to get to know us!

I want to provide you a bit of background bc your post above is heading into that 'defensive' realm, and I can understand why. The reason why you'll get (and, should expect, when people care about you and your doggies) a lot of questions about why you're breeding, how you're breeding, what you know about breeding, the health of your dogs, the size/standard of your dogs, the history of your dogs etc etc etc....is bc people *care*. They care not just about you and your dogs, specifically, but are also passionate about breeding in and of itself...and are passionate about discouraging indiscriminate breeding as part of a larger picture.

Also, we've seen horrible tragedies here at YT when it comes to breeding. We've seen it with experienced breeders too, but especially with inexperienced breeders. You can see that YT has more than 100,000 members - so you can imagine what we've seen here . Very sad...and those sad stories stick to our bones, unfortunately.

So, just please keep an open mind - and extend some understanding to us when we ask lots of questions in getting to know you.

Whether you have vet care next door or not sometimes there is nothing a vet can do and you still lose the female and possible the pups especially if you are not sure what things to look out for that could be warning signs. Genetic testing is very important to make sure you don't bring puppies into this world that have genetic issues and end up having a life of pure suffering and or have to be put down or die because that's not fair to the poor innocent puppy. Big dogs are a lot different then small dogs very much so. No one is putting you down we just want to make sure your doing what is best for your female and that your not risking her life. Before you breed you should have all the info about breeding because its not just as simple as putting a female with a male there are actual living breathing beings that feel pain.

Dogs don't feel the same was we do about being a mom they would be very happy being spayed and simply living there life as a pet.

Dont take this wrong....I am just curious....I have been working and researching and owning Yorkies since 1978....have been breeding since 2000....I am curious how you can tell your female "would love to be a mom"? Also, exactly what traits are you seeing displayed in your female that indicates she "would be great with a litter"? I only ask because I have never seen anything in any of my females that indicate they want to be a momma and they would be good at it. What am I missing?????

If she has never had a litter, she does not have that frame of reference and has no idea about having puppies nor the desire to be a great mom. "What you dont know, you dont miss".

Why dont you just buy you more dogs? A lot easier and your female is not at risk. You can not leave a male and female alone for even a minute...if they tie, all she has to do is decide she is going to another part of the house, yard, crate, or even decide she does not want him back there, and she can SERIOUSLY damage him and herself.....and when she cant shake him off, she can just get pitzed off andtry to kill him.....

Breeding is a lot more intricate and complicated than just throwing two dogs together and "hoping for the best". I hope you reconsider this little adventure...it may very well cst you the life of your beloved female, and the babies too.

Hi and welcome to YT! You have come to the right place! There are many people here who are very knowledgable about yorkies and you will receive good advice. Please don't be offended by the concern expressed by owners as many have had and have seen very painful situations arise with breeding.

You seem to be a very good mommy with your concerns and the best of intentions for your pups and I applaud you for that. Try to take the advice you need and try to remember the concerns expressed by some are the result of the depth of love they have for animals.

I wish you the best of success in your endeavor and hope you will continue to keep us posted on how things are going. Prayers for your pups success and for their health and happiness. Blessings!
