| advice on nursing and supplementing please. We had our 5 pup litter via c section about 53 hours ago. Everyone appears to be doing fantastic. All pups are vigorous....nursing a lot....noone appears to be dehydrated. Mama is eating and drinking a lots. The puppies are just not gaining much. All maintained their weight for the first 48 hours...this morning 1 has gained 1/2 oz which i8s great. 2 have gained 1/4 oz. 1 has gained a 1/10th an ounce. The smallezst girl is the same as she has been since birth. I tried supplementing her with goats milk formula from 4 diff types of bottles with no luck. I finally got her to take a drip at a time from an eye dropper which she happily accepted. Miss t just doesn't seem to have an adequate amount of milk. Her bags almost always appear empty. They are draining her of every drip. I have been checking each nipple and the one that has the most milk I stick little ones on. I have never had a section girl.......and have heard their milk can be slower to come in. She did get an oxy pop shot before we left after the section. Would another oxy shot help her milk supply?? She is on amoxicillin and an anti inflamatory for pain. I am feeding her the puppy formula 3 times per day on top of canned dog food (she won't touch her dry food yet...nor will she eat cottage cheese or eggs). She does like plain high fat yogurt. Her incision looks great and temp is 102....so all looks good. But we need more milk........and unfortunately my other mama is bone dry. Ugh. Any suggestions??? I will be in contact with my vet tomorrow am to see what they suggest.....but sometimes experienced breeders have better suggestions.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | if she was mine , I would give her some fenugreek , I had never used it with my girls, because my girls have always produced good ammounts of milk, but I know breeders that swear by it. here's a bit of info I found online.. fenugreek is supposed to really help Submitted by Sherry. You start out with a couple of capsules and increase daily until she smells like maple syrup! It is available at health food stores and perhaps at your local pharmacy. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum). Fenugreek seed has been used to increase milk production since biblical times. The herb contains phytoestrogens, which are plant chemicals similar to the female sex hormone estrogen. A key compound, diosgenin, has been shown experimentally to increase milk flow.(0) |

| I do have fenugreek got it in a puppy rescue kit I bought. I just wonder if its a good idea to use since she had a section. I know you have to be extremely careful with herbal supplements and sections. On a positive note had our afternoon weigh in and everyone has gained. 1 pup is 5.2 one is 5.0 one is 4.6 and the others are 4.5. I finally heard from my mentor she was whelping a difficult litter and couldn't answer the phone. She said her section girls can be very slow at getting a nice milk supply. And to supplement only if pups are losing....or weakening or dehydrating...suckling stimulates milk supply. With as much as these guys nurse she shbould be able to nurse a dozen soon. Thanks carmen....everyone can always count on you to give a quick and speedy response. I appreciate it very much. | I will be happy to give you the formula that I use for my puppies that need a little extra boost....all, the way from out right fading puppies to ones that just get a supplemental feeding maybe a couple times a day....it delivers 16 calories/cc and turns these babies around rapidly! Let me know if you are interested.... |

| 8 oz Just Born with Colostrum 4 oz Pedialyte 1 raw egg yolk 1 cup whole live culture yougart 3 tbsp. Dr.Millers Nutra Drops Put in a blender and mix well. Feed 1cc/oz body weight. For complete feedings with no help from momma, start with newborns feedings @ every 2 hours, around the clock (breeders know this!). After 36-48 hours, if they are gaining well, can go to every 3 hours...after 48 hours, can go to every 4 hours if their weight is back on track....I usually stay at every 4 hours for about 1-2 weeks....then every 6 hours for another week and they are then ready to be started on the puppy gruel, made with this formula instead of the goats milk.... For supplementing momma, depending on how much you need to supplement, I will usually start with feedings every four hours, during the day, and after I feed return to momma for HER to potty and clean up the baby, so that bonding thing continues. I also give Bene-Bac 1/4-1/2g at birth, then day 3, 5, 7, 9 and at weaning when gruel starts. Like I said, this formula delivers around 16 calories/cc, and it really turns these babies around quickly. I tube feed this as well as bottle feed it...have not lost a "failure to thrive" baby since I started using this. Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 10-08-2012 at 04:54 PM. |

| I want to add this formula was given to me by my dear mentor/friend Jane Harvey from Australia....reknown breeder/AKC judge/videographer/teacher....you can Google her to get an idea of her quite impressive background. She cried with me as I fought to keep a litter alive, but it was too late for this group...that was in 2003. She gave me this formula (except for the Dr.Millers...she uses Karo) and I have not lost a baby since. She is the one that told me to "put those tykes in your bra and carry them around, next to you...they need the warmth as well as the movement, in addition to the feedings, no incubator!!!". How many of you can say you went to work with a litter of puppies in your bra, went to the bathroom to tube feed them every 2 hours.... My supervisor came to ask me a question and she heard one of the tiny babies just squeeking...she clearly did not know what she was hearing....I told her I was wheezing, and I started coughing violently to cover it up...told her I had taken my fluid pill and was running my tail off to the bathroom every hour or so....I covered 2 birds with one stone! |
