| Any advice please Hi, My 3 yr old Yorkie gave birth to 3 puppies today & I have a couple of??. She was day 58, the first 2 pups were breech. The first is a female & there were no complications. Second male pup was breech as well & he is a good size & her contractions were not strong enough to push him out so I had to assist. His breathing was for the first 30 min labored & I gave him O2 & rubbed him for about 10min. He revived & is now doing well. The third pup delivered normally. My question is she is not lactating & I need to know how long can they go without any nourishment? I also am concerned because I did not see any placentas. Perhaps due to breech & water bag had broken. She did lick herself after. I have spoken w the vet & he suggested trying to milk her & if no placentas r produced to bring her in tomorrow for oxytocin & xray. Is that too long to wait? We live 45 min to nearest town. What do u think of using pedialite? Any advice, feedback is appreciated. Thanks |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | do you have red rabsberry leaf tea available, you can buy it at some grocery stores here, I don't know there, but is really good I give to all my girls during and the next day after whelping. also pedialyte will keep her hydrated which is good if nothing else is available, my girl had her puppies on wenesday at 58 days also , she got an oxytocin shot to help her milk come down. your gal might need an oxy shot to help her too. I would take her first thing in the morning to the vet, let the puppies suck on her tits that stimulates the uterus to expelled any retain stuff hopefully and her system to start giving the colustrum needed for the babies. watch them closely tonight, they will be fine until the morning. |

| Looking better...story continues Thankyou Carmen, I'll check into the tea in the am. The good news is they have started nursing & looks like her milk is starting to come in. I read over a lot of the valuable input on this forum and will be checking into Benebac, Nutri drops Nurse mate and oralcal, raspberry tea leaves. I hope I have the names right. My older female is due next week and that will be her third litter. She usually does very well but it never hurts to have supplies on hand, at least it will be there when needed. She had last year off & then she had a false pregnancy. Tomorrow I will be having her xrayed to count heads. The vets here will not ultrasound...is that normal? Said that the pups will not show up. I will keep you updated on our progress. Again thanks for your help & those who have posted in the past, great info! |

| The story cont. More Questions Hi, I just went to your web site & saw that you also r seamstress. Lady of many talents...my sister has one of my Yorkies & he works with her on security. He does his job well; I would like to have a orange construction type vest made for him. I was thinking of reflectors on it as well. The company is called Knights of the Lakeland. How much would you charge? Update: pups & mom r doing well pups r nursing & Eegee is a good mom. There were dark GR spots on her blanket this am so I am not as concerned regarding placentas. I will be watching for any signs of infection w Eegee. Our vet is swamped & I'm still waiting for a call back. Should I insist on oxycotin shot or should I now just wait & watch for any complications. I used to give oxycotin to my sheep when they were lambing. Do any breeders automatically give it to their bitches after whelping? For Nutri Drops I saw .01 cc. Does weight of the pups change the dose? Thanks for the info |

| Off the phone w the vet Not sure if I need a new vet, he was on call & by the sounds of it a newby. I guess u have to start some where but when I ask him a question I wait while he goes on line for answers. He has not heard of any of the supplies I want to get. I love living up north but it does have it's drawbacks...new vets & new Dr. He said that oxytocin shot only works if given after 24 hr period after whelping. I believe she's ok though & is acting "normal". Bonded well w pups. So is eBay the place to get supplies? I will look into the place Carmen had mentioned. Delivery service here is at least a week away. Any northern BC Canadians out there? I wonder if the health food store willhave the items or maybe our pharmacy? |

| There are alot of Nutra Drops out there....I give and recommended Dr.Millers Pet Nutra Drops...(http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre.....631-834-2387) This stuff is super for stress and low blood sugar, and helps the new borns to adjust to the rigors following birth....the dosage stays the same because you do not have to give it but immediately after birth and maybe once or twice more.....I always keep it on hand in case I find myself hand feeding pups, it goes into the formula I feed....) Congratulations on your new babies!!! |

By reading your post, i would still go to the vets and have the oxy shot done by them, it will also help with the milk flow a lot. that is what i would do, if my opinion was to be counted. You do what you decide it is in the best interest of your dog. Blessings. XOXO

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | on the Oxytocin topic, no I would not give it to any dog on my own, even with my experience I still rely on my son to come home and do it. hey I waited a LONG time for him to be a VMD, so I wait and pay him with food, he works for food in my house.LOL, he also does tail docking and dew claws. and for that I have to pay him with the deserts too.. |

| Good info Thanks for the info. Good things to b aware of. I'll let the vet take care of it. Have u heard if the oxytocin needs to b given within 24 hr period? I believe things r going well w the pups & mom at present. Even the male who had a difficult start has really turned around I appreciate every piece of info especially from experience hands, nothing like hands on. I am always looking for experience. Now I need a son who is a vet! U can send him to my place any time & I can make great desserts. Tail docking, the next hurdle. I have always taken them to the vet on day 3 but I'm nervous about anything they may get exposed to. I try usually to go w mom & pups. I am considering not docking, last time around I had some one looking for a pup with intact tail. I have a Yorkiepoo that has her tail & I love it. She was one of the reasons I switched from Great Danes to Yorkies. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Yes, oxytocin works best the first 24 hrs. Delilah got her shot wenesday night, after Owen got home, the uterus contracts and closes after 24 hrs. so for the oxytocin to help with any debris or residue in the uterus it needs to be administer during the 24 hr period after whelping. at least that is how i understand it. My Owen is not available on saturday nights unless is an Emergency ...LOL is College football night.. this is an excerpt from one of his books.. by Dr. Terry E. Reed If the animals are injected within the first 24 hours after kindling, one usually utilizes Oxytocin U.S.P. for the evacuation effect it has upon the uterus to constrict very rapidly. When the uterus constricts, this forces all the foreign materials that may be contained in the uterus, as a result of kindling, out of the uterus so it does not allow infection to take place. If the animal is injected after 24 hours of kindling, it is then recommended that one use some type of estrogen product in order to enhance the blood supply to the uterus. By the utilization of estrogen with the antibiotic, this allows the antibiotic to be much more effective. |
