| No tail docking Hi, I'm getting a beautiful yorkie from a very reputable breeder in my area next Friday. I've already visited the breeder and puppy and signed off on her. I really do trust my breeder - he's terrific. I have a general question though. My puppy does not have her tail docked. I can have it done through my vet or his vet. He indicated that the AKC may be moving in the direction of not requiring docking the tails in the future. I don't mind it at all. The tail is adorable! I have no intention on breeding - but my kids may get involved with Jr. Handling at some point. Does anyone here have additional information about docking the tails & AKC standard? If there are any articles about, I'd love to read them. I've also watched some international dog shows where the tails aren't docked. Is that the international standard? I'm new at this so my terms may not be correct. I'm just curious and love to learn! Thanks. Tracey |

| Just curious....who is the breeder? When I threw the question about not docking tails out to 15 "reputable, very well know breeders" across the US, they laughed at me! "Until the AKC willing accepts un-docked tails, you had better continue to dock your tails....or accept the fact you are going to have a very hard time moving them." The majority of these breeders are show breeders, so that has alot to do with it, but most people want docked tails....I have not had ONE buyer ask me NOT to dock their baby's tails when they are purchasing from me before the litter is born. I wish they would! I hate docking those beautiful little tails! |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | As far as I know the YTCA which is the National Club in America, and who is responsible for maintaining and changing the standard of our breed, has not addressed as yet the tail docking question. In most of Europe it is now the Standard for all breeds to have natural tails. In Canada our National Club is looking at changing the standard to allow for docked or undocked tails to be allowed to show in the ring. If your children want to get into Junior Handling, and you should check this out, but I believe the competitions are based on the Handling skills of the Junior, and not so much on how well their dog that they are showing meets the breed standard. Also check out UKC, as they likely would be more open to natural tails on breeds. So your kids can get involved in junior handling at UKC shows.

| Wingold puppy My puppy is a Wingold puppy. Tom Becker is the breeder. Extraordinarily knowlegable and well known in NJ. He shows & breeds. He's a member of the local YTCA in NJ too. So, I have no reason to doubt him. Thanks for the info about the UKC. I personally think it's inhumane to unnecessarily cut off the tails. From my breeder, there is some history about cutting the tails way back when because of the work the dogs were doing (he explained it to me, I just forget.) But that's not the case anymore. I can't see it really improving the breed. Thanks for your thoughts! Tracey |

| There have been several tailed yorkies that have won recently. I don't think I'd amputate the tail at this late date. I would get a little more info on which judges are more "tail friendly" and go ahead and give it a try. |

| Yippee!!! I've always been a proponent of leaving tails intact, and took some beatings for it. The past year I've heard that YTCA is discussing making the docking optional so that US dogs can compete internationally again. Docked dogs cannot be shown in Europe.

| Interesting information. My Roxy (yorkie mix) was not docked, I loved her waggy tail. Oliver had his tail docked before I saw him. His wee nub is what we call it here. Tail no tail, ears up, ears down in Oliver's case one almost up, one down...he's still our baby. The breed is gorgeous, personalities aplenty!

| I agree with tjdmom. Your puppy is too old to have her tail docked. It's a painful operation at this age. Docking is done within a few days of the pups' lives when it's not as painful for the puppies. My little girl has a docked tail, but my Canadian breeder, who also competes in Europe, has a lot of champions with full tails. I love them both ways! I wish you a happy, healthy life with your little girl filled with much love and laughter.

| If your baby is ready for pickup, I think he/she is too old to have the procedure done. When puppies get their dew claws and tails done, it is done so in a small time frame where it causes them the least amount of distress and pain. To have it done now, is to pup your dog through a major procedure and amputate a part of the pup's body. If it were me in your situation, I'd keep the puppy as is. The children can go to classes and practice with this puppy. If showing is that important, I'd get a second yorkie in the near future that conforms to the current standard.
