Rabies Vaccination

I would like to know how many do the rabies vaccination on their yorkies? I worked as a vet tech for years and pet owners having rabies vaccination done on their pets was always the proper thing to do! But I have seen two of my yorkies have reaction to the rabies and this is becoming a very big issue for me.. Thanks in advance for your help..

Both my Yorkie and my Basset Hound always get their rabies vaccinations. We have never had a problem though...I could see why that would cause concern.

Mine will not receive any more rabies vaccinations...I allowed them to give them to them as puppies before I knew any better but fter my research they will receive no more of the poison. JMHO

Well, I have them give the rabies later than they get their other shots, but I had a little chihuahua that had a reaction to a rabies shot when she was older. Needless to say, I no longer have the rabies given to them when they get older. It's not worth the risk to me. They are much more fragile when they are old.

Jade and Mitsou have had their rabies vaccination last year . This year , my vet told me they didn't need to have one .

I will always advocate the rabies vaccination unless of course your dog will live in a bubble like John Trovolta did

I have had two that had a reaction to the rabies vaccination.. But Lupae's was the most severe case.. The area where the rabies vaccination was administered became a huge sac filled with fluid and our vet had to drain that area 4 different times in 1 1/2 weeks.. The fluid sac went from where the vaccination was given all the way around under his front leg to his chest! Also the area where the rabies was given his coat turned white and the color has never returned to that area.. He is due this month for his second rabies vaccination and I do NOT think I can do it..

Melanie~ How awful. I think you are absolutely right not to. You can see about getting a waiver from your vet but ypu probably will never need it since there is very little risk of getting "caught" with a house dog like a little yokrie and you could always get the waiver then if you received a citation.

I was told by one vet that if my dog bit someone and he his rsbies vaccine wasn't up to date that they could euthanize him and that is a complete and disgraceful lie!!! A lot of vets use those types of scare tactics however and the average person doesn't know any better.

They can quarantine your dog for a period of time (to your home) and require you to vaccinate unless you have a written waiver from your vet and that is it. Thay cannot kill your dog!!

I hope this doesn't get read by someone who is debating this issue - it is NOT poison to protect our pets from a killer disease.

Melanie: I would talk with your vet and possibly see what other vets in your area think - I know many of our pets have reactions but the alternative is much worse.

Plus in many states - it's the LAW.

It is here. They will give you a warning, and if you don't comply in the required time, they WILL take your dog!! All dogs are required by law to be registered, and in order to register, they must have proof of rabies. The fines are pretty hefty, too.

The part of the rabies vaccination that I totally do NOT understand is "A 200 lb Great Dane receives the SAME DOSE as a 2-8 lb. yorkie! Absolutely makes NO sense to me! Mentioned earlier I stated that I always told pet owners that it was a state law and it will protect your pet, but it can also cause it life threatening harm! If the Rabies Vaccination does harm or kill your pet the companies that manufacture the vaccination will not ever do the right thing and step-up and accept responsilbity for the vaccination..

I will talk to my vet at great lengths before another rabies vaccination is ever done on my Lupae..

Don't just go by one vet...I'd get the phone book out and call them all (well, maybe not them all, but a few anyway).

We do rabies vac but never before 6 months and never in conjunction with another vac and have had no bad reactions thus far. There are rabid, raccoons, skunks, groundhogs shot by farmers in this area every year and it is not worth taking chances. My kids love to go outside to play and I want them protected. Accidents can happen so quickly.

A rabies vaccination is required in Illinois, too. Stewie had one and reacted very horribly to it; he almost died. He will never get another. They can lock me up before I put him at risk again. If he didn't have a reaction, I would without hesitation get him vaccinated againn. My Lab (RIP) was given the rabies vaccine @ 5 or 6 mos when we brought her home from the Humane Society. They told us that she had a reaction, too, so we never gave her another in the 14-15 years she was alive.

There are not many wild animals in Chicago, so I am not very worried about him not being vaccinated. If there were a lot of animals that could be rabid, I would seek out alternatives to keep him safe from disease.

The one thing I do is seperate the vaccination. Rabies aren't given with another, that way if there is a reaction you know the cause. I have never had a problem with any of my Yorkies throughout the years, maybe I'm lucky. We live in the country and there are a lot of wild animals around so for me it's not even an option, because the alternative is deadly. My horse even gets one...
