Yorkie Yakker | xray question for a 2 yr old pregnant yorkie I have a 2 yr old yorkie female. She has champion bloodlines and has been health checked by a reproduction vet. I also have a champion stud who also went through the health screenings needed before choosing to mate. This is my female's first litter. I went for x-rays today (day 48) per vet request and he said that the mating date had to be off because the pups were not fully calcified. The female was bred on May 24th and 26th. She has definitely developed mammary tissue, enlarged nipples, and swollen belly. Truth be told I do not see how she could get much bigger. When the repro vet palpated her belly on the 20th of June he felt at least five, but thinks he felt two more at ribs. I am totally confused. Could I be off the date of actual conception that far (5 days) like my vet suggests? or could her movement in an xray only make it appear blurred babies? Help please. |

| I would take her back in a week to recheck, have another x-ray done. I don't know why your vet told you 48 days, I've always been told to do it at 56 days, any earlier and your chances of seeing the pups are limited. If my memory is correct, sperm can live for several days so there is a possibility that her real conception date is later. Again I would redo the xrays in a week when they are closer to being born. She won't whelp before 58 days so you have plenty of time but it gives you a better idea of how many puppies and their size.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I don't take my females for xrays until day 58, by experience the best xrays are done after day 57 when the babies are fully calcified. best of luck with your litter.. I just had one 28 days ago... |

Yorkie Yakker | Thank you Thank you for your replies. I will take her back on the 18th for new x-rays. The repeat exposure will not harm the babies will they? I am not worried about the finances. I came in to this knowing that I will loose money on breeding because I want to do this correctly. I love the breed and it took me several yorkies before i found a male and a female that I know will better the breed. My other yorkies I have spayed/neutered. Again, thank you for your responses. |
