| Yorkie's Ears (question) Is there a certain gene that causes the ears to be erect vs. floppy, or is this just something you have to "train" the ears to do when the pup is young? If it's a trained thing, then how old is too old to train the ears to be erect? One of my girl's ears are floppy and the other one's are up about 1/2 the time, and down 1/2 the time. Kinda weird, I think. I tried taping them when they were about 8-10 weeks old, but they scratched & rubbed the ears raw, so I just thought it wasn't worth it. Thanks for ALL your input! |

Yes, you can tape the ears in order to get them to stand. It can be a long process. But it looks like you've tried that. How old are your furbabies? Sometimes it can take up to 6 months for their ears to stay erect all the time. I don't know if it'll work for you but I massage the puppies ears...has worked every time...but could just be an old wive's tale.

| Well, my babies are 8 1/2 and 9 1/2 months. I do shave about 1/3 of the way down the ears to take the weight off. The younger one has heavier ears, and hers are the floppy ones. The older has much lighter ears. Guess that's why hers stand sometimes. I read a thread on here about the tear mend that you can use, with a cut-out piece of brown paper sack, gluing it to the ear leather (inner) to get to stand. Are they too old to give that a try? I really don't want to hurt them, or cause stress in any way, but since I do plan to eventually breed them, the pups may sell better if the mamma has erect ears. |

| I have a sheet that we made up to give to the people that buy our puppies to help with the ears. PM me with your email address and I can send you a copy of it.

| This thread has instructions on training the ears to stand (if it's not genetic). http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22571 |

| I've tried taping Lucy's ears a couple of times using several different methods and they flop over when taped. I'm not doing it right. So here's my question, how close to their head (how far down the ear) should the bag be. Does this make sense? |

| If your pups are at 8 months or older it may be too late. I bought a show quality bitch at 8 months old that I had to return because her ears would not stand. My vet told me that it should be done before they are 4 months old or there is little chance that they will ever stand. It won't hurt to try though. |

| I never have had to train my Yorkie's ears to stand up . As babies they had tiny ears so it was easier to stand . The large base ones have a tendancy to be floppy . |

| I have never had a problem with the pups from my line either so I think it is a genetic trait. I have talked to several breeders that have to train all of their pups ears. |

| I'm not a breeder and, actually, Desi is my first Yorkie. But, for what its worth, here is my experience with floppy ears. I got Desi at 12 weeks old, she had very floppy ears. Not only did her ears flop forward but the tips curled to the sides so she looked like her ears were coming out of the side of her head. The breeder told me that they would stand on their own if I kept them shaved. Well, they didn't. I tried everything. I used the masking tape, with the strip in the middle (which made her look terrible) I tried the paper bag and eye lash glue, I messaged every day, I did the cottage cheese. Finally, I decided that I would have to tape long term if her ears had any chance at all. I was afraid of irritating her ears so I went to CVS Pharmacy and got Nexcare Flexible Clear Tape. This tape has lots of little pin holes in it so its breathable (it comes in a scotch tape dispenser). I pull out strips the size of her ear and trimmed the corners to form the ear tip and I pressed in place to the inside of her ear. This tape is clear so you really don't even see it when its in. I would leave the tape in for a week, then take it off for a day or two and retape. I did this for more than a month and finally both her ears are up at 11 months old. If you do this, please keep checking the ear to make sure its not irritated, and when you take off the tape clean the inside of the ear with a little alcohol to get out any old tape residue. Good luck..
