| Hard ?'s for breeders.. I was thinking about breeding my Lexi one time, keeping the pups and then haveing her spayed. I decided against it had her spayed and bought another pup instead. I have however been considering breeding yorkies. I have lots of research to do first and I have to know I would beable to sell the pups after they were born. (I think I would have a problem wanting to keep them all). Now for my all my ?'s.. 1) what test should be done on the female before breeding her? 2) what test should be done on the male? 3) roughly speaking what are the cost of taking care of mom while pregnant? (please break it down for me) 4) any special tips for caring for the mother while pregnant? 5) if c-section is needed to be done, what is the cost (roughly estimating) 6) what are the exspenses of the pups after birth til sale? (again please break it down) 7) any other exspenses I should be aware of? 8) what are the risk for the mother having a litter? Please add any ?'s I may not have asked. I also wanted to point out even though I'm asking lots of ?'s about cost doesn't mean I can't afford it. Money is not an issue. I just want to know what to expect and if it is all worth it FOR ME...

| **I have all my Yorkies BA tested, full blood panels. **My females have vaginal swabs and progestrone tests done prior to matitng to make sure I breed them at peak of ovulation. **Once bred, I have my female ultra sounded **xrayed a copule days before due date. **Because I work full have my moms-to-be stay with a mid-wife that my clinic has. She has a set up at her home to keep expecting moms on labor watch for 24 hrs round the clock. I send my mom's there 2 days before they are due so that they can be monitored and watched by someone experience who can handle any situation in my absense. That alone costs me $80 a day. **Then a c-section if there was a problem. **Once the puppies are here I pay to have tails and dews done, all shots are done by my vet they have at least 2 sets before leaving. **Stools are checked, they are on flea prevention, and will have a full blood panel to clear them of LS any other health problems that can be seen in the blood. I also alter my puppies before placing them now. The spay is done by Laparscopy which costs twice as much as the traditional spay. Now this is what I do, I have to do some extras because I work but for the most part are these expenses you should expect. Hugs, wini |

**I have all my Yorkies BA tested, full blood panels. I had this done with both of my girls, my vet recommended it. **My females have vaginal swabs and progestrone tests done prior to matitng to make sure I breed them at peak of ovulation. Lexi has had this done. My first vet that spayed her missed an ovary and she went into heat at 9 months old. My new vet did the vaginal test and 4 progestrone tests to make she she was in heat not something else...( this test was $60 each time) Sounds like you are a very good breeder. Thanks...

| I'm pretty lucky, my vet is a reproduction specialist that's known world wide. I forgot to add. If you have your own stud. You may want to have a sperm count done to make sure he's got good swimmers I would have him brucellosis tested if you bought him as an adult. If you are using a stud, I would ask to see Brucellosis test results. Good luck! Hugs, Wini |

| roughly speaking what are the cost of taking care of mom while pregnant? (please break it down for me) any special tips for caring for the mother while pregnant? You will need to keep her well fed and give her calcium supplements and the cost of the x-rays. if c-section is needed to be done, what is the cost (roughly estimating) It cost me $500.00 in an Animal ER Clinic (because she went into labor on a Friday night), this included X-rays. what are the exspenses of the pups after birth til sale? (again please break it down) This will depend on the number of pups you have and if you sell them after 2 or 3 sets of shots. A litter of 5 ran me $100 per set of shots and about $30 for tails and dew claws. I get the puppy food free through Nutro Choice Breeder program. any other exspenses I should be aware of? You will need to set up a whelping area and you will need a place to keep the pups as they grow. what are the risk for the mother having a litter? I have had friends lose the mother and I have lost a pup. The biggest question is are you breeding for the Breed or for the money? |

| You are welcome. Just remember that there is a cost that is not counted in dollars. You need to be willing to stand behind your breeding when the pups are placed with new families and make sure that the homes are acceptable. It is not easy and I found myself rescueing one of my own pups. People are sometimes hard to read and you might miss the fact that one of your potentials should not own a Yorkie. |

| 1) what test should be done on the female before breeding her? I have all my females vet checked before they are breed. Bile Acid test -full panel. OFA certified and also thing of having then SERF certified. If studding out you will need a burcellosis test as well (almost ALL breeders require this test) 2) what test should be done on the male? see above~~ same procedure 3) roughly speaking what are the cost of taking care of mom while pregnant? (please break it down for me) I follow each pregnancy on all my females, which include at least one ultra-sound, but usually two are done with in the 63 days of gestation. 4) any special tips for caring for the mother while pregnant? I put them back on puppy food during the pregnancy and while they are nursing. One week before their due date I give them cottage cheese or sour cream with a egg yoke every other day until their milk drops good. Refrain them from jumping off the couch, ect... 5) if c-section is needed to be done, what is the cost (roughly estimating) A scheduled c-section is cheaper than emergency. 6) what are the exspenses of the pups after birth til sale? (again please break it down) You start with dew claws and tails first this is done when they are 3 days old. At two weeks you start worming. At six weeks first shots. Some breeders do their own shots, I prefer to have the vet do it, then they can be examined again. If you keep the pups until 12 weeks, that I strongly recommend, you will have one more set of shots. If you elect to do rabies vaccine then you have that cost... I personally hold off on the rabies for a while, not due to the expense. A little yorkie pup is given the same dose as a Great Dane pup. For this reason I try to wait until their little bodies can except this vaccination better. Under certain circumstances this is not possible so I do make sure they are not given at the same time as the 5 in 1 is. I wait a week and we finish up then. Full Blood panels are done on all the pups and a final health exam. 7) any other exspenses I should be aware of? **You will need a place for the pups at around 3 weeks they will start walking and need to be contained in a safe area. I used plastic lattice with the real small holes about one inch. One sheet can be cut in half and then in half again. Then using zip strips to connect the pieces. Easy clean up can be done with a garden hose. As the puppies grow you can add sections. Some use playpens. **Laundry Soap- puppies are a lot of work, you will be cleaning non-stop. I like to keep fresh bedding down at all times. So this means changing when need. At least a load a day, per litter. **Stud fees if you don't have your own stud **Shipping or traveling to meet new owners-- if you decide to ship pups and or meeting people halfway to deliver a pup. **Long Distance Expenses- for screening potential owners and checking references. ** whelping supplies and first aid kit 8) what are the risk for the mother having a litter? There is always a risk for mother and litter. I didn't list any prices as many vets fees are different depending on what area you live in. I am sure I missed posting things so sorry about that, but this will give you a idea.
