| Weaning questions Shelby's pups will be 4 weeks on Monday. I was hoping to start them on some rice cereal with cow's milk (is cow's milk okay?), this Sunday. They all seem to be interested in Momma's food and whenever they can, they make a beeline for her dish and start licking at the food. They don't have any teeth yet. Is it okay to start giving them solids? And how often? Shelby will still feed them for the most part, right? Thanks, I'm new to this, so every milestone for the pups is a milestone for me as well. |

| How many puppies are there? IMO, 4 weeks is still to young- at least wait for Some teeth before starting weaning; but if it is a big litter, some puppy formula or goats milk between meals wouldn't hurt... I always read about canned goats milk, bit I can't get it here so use puppy formula. Keep them away from solids for a while, they can't go straight from milk to solids or it will Hirt their tummies, so you may need to put mommas food up higher to stop them getting at it. See how they get on with a bowl of warm (body temp) milk for a day or so before gradually adding baby rice... Their momma will tell you when it's time to start weaning properly, but that could be a few weeks yet, so don't panic!

| Just remembered there are 4 puppies, isn't there? Shelby should still be able to supply all the milk they need, but no harm in getting them used to the taste of what you will be using in the rice... (please correct me if I'm wrong- but I'd like to think that goes without say!)

| No cows milk! What are you feeding Mom? She will wean when it's time. If you think the babies need supplemented, I grind puppy food in a blender and add goats milk or milk replacement and let them lick at that, then in a week or two, I just feed ground puppy kibble. |

| Shelby has 3 puppies and is eating Beneful puppy chow. Can I get goat's milk at a regular supermarket, or do I need to go to a specialty store for it? |

| Oops, submitted too soon. Shelby has 3 puppies and is eating Beneful puppy chow. Can I get goat's milk at a regular supermarket, or do I need to go to a specialty store for it? I guess I'll wait a while to start feeding them solids, I just thought it was customary to start solids when they are around 4 weeks old, and with them interested in Shelby's food, that it was time. Shelby is still nursing them every 2-3 hours, but they always try to nurse whenever she is nearby, though she won't let them all the time, she'll stand up and shake them off, but will lay down and stretch out on her back and let them nurse when she's in the mood. Is it normal for them to constantly try to nurse? They're definitely getting enough milk, since they're still gaining weight and weigh in between 1lb 8 oz and 1 lb 10 oz. Will the puppies lose weight when they start getting more active (like babies do when they become mobile)? |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | You can buy canned goats milk at walmart in the baking aisle. My grocery store (Publix) also carries it in their baking aisle, too.
