I am considering vaccinating the puppies myself. Unfortunately we hit a rough patch finicially right now & my vet is charging $42 a pup for their 5 way, thats a total of $168... I am looking online & finding many places that ship the vaccines, but the ONLY thing I cant seem to find is what is the dosage? I know they sell single dose, but is that a single dose for a Yorkie or a German Shepherd, what is your advice/ suggestion on those that vaccinate on their own? I found a thread on here with the sites of places to buy but doesnt say how much, so hoping you can help. Thanks

This is what I get, it is the same my vet uses...
Duramune Max 5 - Revival Animal Health

Oh and it is 1ml per dog. The dosage is the same for all dogs but some will give the small ones less but it isn't recommended. Mine get the full 1ml and do fine.

Before you go this route you need to be sure you know how to properly give them the shot, and what signs to look for in case of a reaction. And don't forget your needles and waste receptacle. Also don't vaccinate before 8 weeks old.

I agree. Please learn how to give shots (from your vet or vet tech). My degree is in Nursing - but still, it was an entirely different experience giving my little Marcel shots (allergy shots) than giving a human shots. And I'm talking just a subq injection for Marcel, which theoretically should be the easiest.

Around here vets will often do low cost vaccination clinics during community festivals, etc., usually charging only $5-10 to vaccinate. That might even be cheaper than ordering vaccines. Also, if you're the one giving rabies vaccines you wouldn't be getting the rabies certificate many cities require as proof of vaccination.

Yikes, I'm glad that I don't live in FL...I wouldn't be able to afford the vet bills for my four Yorkies. My vet only charges $15 per pup. And between $22 - $28 per vaccination as adults depending on what it is.

I am curious about this as well. I have thought about it, and asked a friend who has done it before about showing me, BUT I am not sure what to purchase.

I believe that you can purchase the dog vaccinations at TSC / Tractor sup co.

From my understanding (and if this isn't worded right, please do correct) every puppy Must have the same amount of vaccine. A vaccine is dead or dormant cells of the virus it is to protect against. If too much is given, it could (in something like 1% of cases) cause the dormant strain to awaken with devastating results. The same can be said for too little- there is not enough in the blood stream for the White blood cells to make the correct enzymes to fight it, and if the puppy then becomes infected with one virus, it can awaken any dormant virus in the system- with the dead virus, with to little it will not has much effect, and too much will cause the immune system to go into overdrive- with lukemia symptoms...
A wolfhound and yorkie therefore need the same, just as with the tb vaccine, a 2ft child and 6ft child need the same amount...
Please get someone experienced to show you how to prepare and administer the vaccines, that is a very high vet fee, but I personally would rather try to pay it than risk incorrectly vaccinating. Would your vet not give you credit until the puppies are homed and paid for?

Be sure to check the new Florida laws for breeders... pups must be vaccinated and check by a vet before selling...BUT that might be for all shipped to Florida from out of state breeders...I need to reread it to make sure..

I know vets are expensive, you might check out Pet Supermarket...they give discount shots...best wishes...

Will you be worming your pups as well? I know my vet requires worming, yet many breeder don't worm unless a problem exists.

We have a local shelter here "Angels for Animals" who does low cost Neutering and Spading who also does discounted vac. / The only problem with that is that you must keep track of the dates and when vaccinations are due. Not easy for some people to do. (I keep a compleat list of when my pet are due) but that is just how I am. I much prefer to have my regular Vet take care of it, and send me a reminder in the mail.

Vaccines all seem to be 1ml. It's the same for all sizes and ages.

Don't forget your sharps container, and make sure the brand is used by vets (if it's at a farm store, then it may not have been kept at the right temp. and it may be a brand that isn't great/as effective).

Having Benadryl injectable on hand wouldn't be a good idea. Either way you'll need to be close to a vet.

Also, this really can be a problem because the physical exam is skipped. Some vets won't even accept breeder given vaccines. So your pups may get revaccinated.

I like Drs. Foster and Smith. They sell individual doses and have a video that shows how to dose as well as a helpline for questions about what vaccines you need for your area and when to dose.

I also order their pet record pamplets (10 cents apiece) and peel the label from the vaccine and place in the record so when the puppies go to their new vet they will know exactly what they were given and when. This would also be handy incase of vaccine recalls.

hey everyone thanks for all the advice & suggestions... I do know how to give an injection b/c my cat is diabetic & I give injections twice a day, so thats easy.

About the dosage- I called a vaccine distributor & they told me that all dogs get the same dose, doesnt matter the size, it didnt sound right to me but looks like its true....

I did look into pet supermarket but its about the same price as my vet, so no biggie, rather see my vet instead. I am surprised at the price b/c they are a fairly priced vet, our low cost vet down the street is even cheaper BUT they charge an office visit, my vet doesnt. Im thinking I will take them for their 1st round to the vet & then Ill do the other 3 rounds myself... & BTW they are getting their shots at 6 wks, which is what my vet recommended, I guess b/c I live in sunny south florida.
