| Each situation is different, the thickness of the ear leather, teething, and size of yorkie. If yorkies ears aren't up between the ages of 8 to 10 weeks I begin the taping process.

I agree completely. It is hard to know exactly when to tape ears... some in my last litter didn't need tape, some only tape for a day or two... and others, well I would tape and tape and tape and they would stay up and then flop down. silly pups

| I don't if this is helpful, but I started shaving (with a trimmer) my pups ears at about 3 weeks. They were pretty hairy and two of them had "big" ears (IMO). One pup's ears stood right away, the other two (with the bigger ears) needed some help. I think I started taping at about 4 weeks of the two with big ears. One of those only needed taped a couple times and they stood, the other had to be taped off & on for a good month before they stood. I still shave everyone's ears once a week. They've come to expect it. I say, "come get your ears shaved" and they all come running and line up. Kinda funny.

| Wouldn't a well-bred yorkie's ears naturally go up? I'm always amazed when I see pics of dams &/or sires with floppy ears...should they even be bred? Isn't this a fault?

I think a well bred Yorkie's ear are more likely to stand on their own, but a lot plays in to such things. My Yorkies are extremely well bred and one ended up having ears that were slow to stand, so based on that I'd have to say the answer to your question is 'no' (on whether or not needing a little extra help is a fault - whereas ears that absolutely won't stand would be considered a fault)

I'm tired...I always forget some things. I will say I do have one Yorkie that isn't "high quality/well-bred" ( hubby says I'm always criticizing her - so I will add she's the absolutely sweetest little thing, but I got "ripped off" (IMO) regarding her quality, but that's neither here nor there as we love her and she's our sweet little pet/we don't breed her) Anyway, she had one ear that didn't want to stand and I literally taped her one ear off and on for MONTHS (I was determined to make that ear stand) - it finally stood, but I know it wouldn't have without all that extra help, so I do think a "lesser" quality Yorkie probably could have ears that won't stand as the majority of Yorkie's do)

| I didn't pick out my yorkie. She was a gift from my kids who are both away at college and were worried about me being lonely. Although they were raised with yorkies and said they put alot of effort into chosing one for me...I didn't know what I was getting. I was relieved when her ears went up on their own, but I had tape on standby just in case. She looks like quite a homely thing right now....I'm hoping this is just a puppy phase But she is the sweetest, smartest lil pup. I'm already completely in love with her, no matter how she turns out (but I'm thankful she's a girl, cos good bows & outfits can go along way to making her look cute..lol)

Bambi had his ears all perky when I got him at 3 months old. Nina had hers stand until she was 8 months old! She used to have one ear standing and the other down... oddly enough it was a different ear each week. lol And Mia's ears are still on their way up.. only the tip is hanging halfway down but I kind of like how that looks. Maybe I just like off standards lol... let's make a rebellion! lol | |

| I never would have considered taping or trimming the ears to make them stand until I joined here; and still havnt done it yet... Every puppy's so far have stood on their own- I had thought that was just what naturally happened, but now y'all have me worrying about Poppets ears- they are floppy at the tips (she is still a baby tho) but im assimg they will deff stand, and I Love the fluffy puppies to have slightly floppy ears for a bit- until they grow up a little! Is that bad!?! What age would you all say (and I know opinions will differ! ) would be the final cut off to say 'right, your gettin taped!'? I just down right don't know

| A breeder over here in England always told me to rub there ears to encourage blood flow to the ends. The widening of the veins with blood helping them to stand.A similar procedure as with mens bitsWe have always done this while the dogs have sat with us.All of our dogs have liked this and have come to regard it as fussing. All my dogs ears have stood up.Don't know if this was helping or they would have stood up anyway.Has anybody over there heard of this or done this?

However, one must remember that these pups are growing, teething, etc....all things that require calcium...........the calcium isn't getting to the ears and assistance may be needed.
