Mine had 3 pups (good size: 4.5, 5.0, & 5.5) weighed 5 1/2 pre pg and 6.4 at xray time, while nursing dropped to skeletal 4.5 and after a high calorie diet which she can't seem to give up being a chow hound she currently weighs 6.2 (no ribs to be felt!!!) I'm hoping when the weather clears (10" of snow last night!!) I can take her out walking, get her back to a fit weight for her body. But I don't think size is the sole contributing factor to an easy whelp. Mine's mother and grandmother had theirs quick and easy. Mine had all three in 2 1/2 hours without a whimper. So I think genetics plays a great deal in whether or not a dog will do okay. I had her thoroughly checked before getting her bred, the vet assured me her hips were good and wide and he didn't think she'd have any problems, again confirmed at x-ray time...they measured the pups heads to her pelvis and again confirmed she'd have them on her own. Did they compare the pup's sizes to your dog's pelvis?? That would tell you more.

| Thanx for that, she weight 6.4 pre preg and yes the vet said she should be fine to whelp on her own. Just to make sure to keep a close eye for any signs of her having trouble specially with this being her first litter

| Congrats on the pregnancy! 4 is a nice number. If your vet thinks she will be ok on her than I'm sure he's right, just go with your gut if something doesn't seem right call you vet. Good luck! |

congrats on the expected puppies! as kjcmsw said... it's all about the genetics; what where his parents like- structure and size? there could vey well be a throwback of size, but the vet should have raised the concern if there were any larger puppies... but small at birth in no way means it Will be a small adult- or vise versa. you mentioned this is her 1st litter, is it Your 1st litter as well? if so, would your vet or a local Good breeder be willing to be there just incase? and have you been told or read about the assistance the majority of yorkies need during the actual birth? her age could also play a part in the ease of the whelp... i'm assuming she is a young adult? i will apologise (a little) now for the 'bombardment' of questions (i'm sure others will have more that could prove useful for you)- some newer members recently seem to have been getting very annoyed when they learn that yorkietalk as a whole cares a great deal for Everyones yorkies, not just their own... and some take great offense to being asked questons (needed to explain just incase!) and of course we will try our best to answer every question you have!!

| Have you tried to look for a mentor? It's best to have someone that knows more than you and has done this to be there to help. I know asking online is easy but, it's best to have someone there with you.

| Great advice. But don't settle for someone that has experience with just any type of dog, like large breed dogs. It should be someone with a lot of experience with whelping a toy breed. Our tiny ones tend to need more help and intervention.
