Yorkie Yakker | Looking for Sage Breeder Advice Under Vet Care and when the timing was right, our two spoiled and beloved Yorkies mated resulting in five puppies on the day after Thanksgiving. We had expert help with their in home delivery and NO problems. Mommy Zoie was amazing and so was daddy Zack. I really expected we would have two, even three and was set to see all neutered at a future date. When the Vet said five - floored me, though I was excited. Please note the event was well researched, prepared for and planned for and a lot of expert advice. We have the room, resources, and time, and now that the puppies will soon be 8 weeks, I am getting so attached - we all are. What would you advise me to do. Zack and Zoie are purebred and the puppies are beautiful. I refused to have their tails docked which is against AKC - I do have one CKC registered. If I do sell any puppies, I only want them to go to good homes (not before 12 weeks) and do not wish to advertise. I am not a breeder and do not want to be. I am asking if anyone can give me a list of questions (I have many) but I am looking for other to ask potential human families the puppies might consider owning. I am legit - you can check my blog and website (antiques and writing). Just remember - I want to do right for my Yorkies - and I really do want to keep them all - so tell me why I shouldn't too! Thanks Bev |

If you want to keep them all (you did bring them into the world) then keep them, it's up to you, they are your dogs, sell or keep: your (and yours alone) choice. I wouldn't advise coming right out and asking certain questions (like: Have you ever gotten rid of/rehomed/ethuanized a dog before?) as people will lie. Generally speaking, people aren't stupid and know how to answer loaded questions, so you aren't fooling anybody. Just sit and have a normal conversation with them ask about their past pets, maybe phrase a sentence like what's the best and worst thing about dog ownership, etc...if they dumped one off it'll come out in the conversation eventually (as long as they don't feel threatened by interrogation).

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I would ask them "why" they want a yorkie. Too many people have the wrong idea about yorkies, and believe they are cute little lap dogs. I would also ask them to tell me about their experience with pets, and if they have any pets now, and what happened to the others. I would ask them their views on discipline and their views on training including housebreaking. I would ask the name of their veterinarian. I would ask them about their families, and their ages, I personally don't think yorkies are the ideal dog for families with small children. I'm not a breeder though; these are just some of the questions Joey's breeder asked. I think I would also inquire about their financial stability, I would want to know if they could afford to care for it should it have a genetic problem. Joey's breeder offered to take Joey back should at any time in the future I wouldn't be able to give him the care he needs, for whatever reason. I hope you consider doing the dewclaws even if you don't dock the tails; we are always reading about ripped dewclaws on Yorkietalk. I'm with shodanusmc on this, if you've ever had a dog get pregnant you are a breeder. I think a better statement is "I don't plan on breeding again, and I'm taking measures to ensure that doesn't happen."

Here are Some Questions you might ask of potential homes : How long they have lived at their current address? The name and number of their veterinarian. How many other dogs do they own? Have they ever owned a yorkie? Children in the house? What ages? Where would the puppy spend his/her days and nights? Is someone home during the day at your house? Please describe the living situation for the puppy. How many hours daily would the dog be left alone? If no one is at home during the days would you plan for someone to come into your home to let the pup out and feed. Have you ever surrendered a dog to an animal shelter or Rescue? If so Why? Ask for 3 references. | |

Yorkie Yakker | Thank you and other Thank all of you for replying. Many good questions to ask, and some for me. I think if you are a breeder - then you knew why you got into breeding. I did not do so to sell puppies. After much research and other we chose a Yorkie - our Zoie - to fill a hole after loosing our Scottie to a tumor. Zoie did more than that, fill a hole, and both my husband and I became wrapped around her paws. I wanted more Yorkies, and then we got Zach. Their personalities and what they brought to us, as well as their "lines" told me they would make beautiful babies. I've had the same vet for 20 years and would not have bred Zoie and Zach if I did not or my Vet approve - with the full intention of keeping the puppies - and as you should know - five is a big brood for Yorkies. If I do sell any of my puppies - it will not be because I have to, but because someone can love and spoil them as much as I and know the amount of time and care they take. It is like having children - and yes - I did have their dew claws removed - and dewormed and health checked and so on, and they are chunky and happy, cleaned, well fed, mothered, and loved. And yes - each day brings a stronger attachment. I'm just wondering too - how you get over it if you let one of your babies go? |

whichever you decide- selling them on or keeping them yourself, it will be the best decision for both you and them... but it has to be made by you! have fun with your bundles of love

Yorkie Yakker | Thank you, and you made me cry. Having just spent the past few hours with puppies, and cleaning the puppy palace, you made my day. My husband often gets upset at picking up the poop. They are learning. As we are too. We'll see what happens. I am in no hurry, just taking each day in a different light. I am wondering again - if some one has seven Yorkies, and is not a breeder - how do they survive? |

| They learn how to properly groom the dogs...imagine the expense of 7 at the groomer! Never had a desire to breed, or have a littler of anything. Would be to hard to let them go! Now kids, that is a different story...."when are you moving out"? |

| questions for buyers The following is a link to my application online, feel free to copy any and all if it assist you in finding excellent homes... This is always a starting place for me and gives me some up front knowledge about each prospective buyer. That way, on the first visit, in person or via phone contact, I can discuss any issues intellegently without having to have a long question session. Often, the questionairre itself provides me with the info I need to tactfully decline prior to contacting references, ect. Again, it is just a really good starting point and has proved very effective for me...
