Default Question on inbreeding?

Hello! I bought a Yorkie book when I first got Tucker and it said that it was ok to breed father and daughter or mother and son but never brother and sister..Well I just received the 3 generation pedigree on Tucker and his grandparents on his fathers side are father and daughter...Is he inbred? WIll he have problems later in life? Please let me know, I am really concerned about this....Thanks!

Bump...

I'm interested in hearing the answer to this too. I've always thought that the practice of breeding father to daughter was a bit "icky" but I'm aware that breeding animals are a different story.

Inbreeding is done to bring out any faults, or very good points in the dogs. Experienced breeders do it to imporve their lines by using only the best that they can. It is not done every time, but only once in the while to find if the line has any bad faults, or real good points. Your baby should be fine as long as it has not been the practice all along.

Default I'm curious about the inbreeding question too.

It is my understanding that it is actually beneficial to breed father/daughter if the daughter has the good points a breeder would like to strengthen, but only father/daughter once - never father/granddaughter, or it weakens the line. Also, that it is never good to breed mother/son or siblings.

I wonder if anyone has tested this sort of inbreeding to any great degree - I mean, what would be the point of having beautiful physical qualities if the pups can't be house broken or remember where their food dish is?

I know AKC accepts father/daughter breeding, but I don't believe they accept mother/son.

Default breeding

AKC makes no rules on this..mother/son, full siblings..AKC is a recording agency, not in the business of telling breeders what to breed to what. I have seen numberous AKC pedigrees with these combos..not what I would do personally.

I have never heard that breeding grandsire to granddaughter weakens the bloodline. That makes no sense to me..if the bloodline is healthy, how could it make a diffrence?..but I am more then willing to be open to this..where can I find research?

Genetically what is the difference in breeding father/daughter or mother/son?
I do not see the need to inbreed any longer..excellent article in the YTM about inbreeding not being what it once was due to too many genetic problems in Yorkies now. Too risky.

LOL...my husband says if I had applied myself to a money making career like I have to Yorkies he could have retired long ago.
I have lots of answers, but they are not always right by a long shot..one thing I like here on YT is we can allow another to have opinions...if it is weakening to breed certain combo's I really want to read it...not interested in doing it, but it is good info to pass along.

You could open a operator service for people with questions with their yorkies. I really value your opinion so much. I am so glad you are a member here.
