| My mentor is finally trusting me with a stud! I've been spending the last two years talking to my mentor after we quickly became friends because we feel the same about Yorkies and breeding. She is a very reputable breeder and I'm honored that she believes that I'll be a good breeder. Well, she is finally trusting me with a stud! I'm getting him in a month or so - he is being imported from Germany. I have a quick question though: how is raising a stud different from a neutered boy? Are there any special considerations, except for belly bands (marking), special care for their family jewels when it comes to heat & cold, etc. Are there any special tips or advice on raising a great stud? Also, I read somewhere that if you discourage the male from humping a female, he will be hesitant to do so in the future... I have a spayed female at home and I'm wondering how I should handle their interactions?

| First off, CONGRATS! I know you must be excited to be taking the next step as a breeder and what a great feeling that your hard work is paying off. I didn't really notice any difference between having a stud vs a neutered boy until after they'd actually been used as a stud. And I can assure you, no amount of discouraging them not to mount a female had any effect on their willingness to do so when presented with one in heat. The major differences I noticed was that they seem to have a tendancy to mark in the house afterwards. (But it always seemed to be quickly remedied once they were neutered later on.) Also--and this drove me crazy--my one guy would pant and pace alot after having been studded. Sometimes for no reason, but typically when someone came in who'd been around another dog--any dog, male or female, intact or not. Best of luck again! |

| Congrats. I have one of my breeder's "unused" studs at my place right now. . . kind of a funny story how that happend. Anyways, his name is Jimmy. We also have two spayed females. Jim is the sweetest little man and has NEVER tried to mount his "sisters". However, if he hasn't seen other family members' spayed female yorkies in a while, he goes beserk and gets all riled up. I said all this to say, my breeder told me that if he was humping someone of something, NOT to say "bad" just to simply move him and give him an alternative activitiy. Apparently if you start yelling at them, when they are humping things, they will have a negative association with breeding and it could make them bad stud dogs. One other thing, I use size 1 baby diapers inside the belly bands. I find them quick and easy to change and there really isn't any mess. Actually, come to think of it, sometimes I skip the belly band just but the baby diaper on him (I just wrap it about his mid-section like you would a belly-band). How old is your new little boy? |

| Thanks for the advice! I will be sure to redirect him if he tries to hump anything unsuitable, lol, but I'll make sure that he doesn't get a negative association with breeding - that's exactly what I'm afraid of... My new boy will only be coming home in January and he will be about 4 months old then - he is only 11 weeks old now. Thanks for the tip on the belly bands and diapers. Another friend of mine, another reputable breeder, has a lady who makes belly bands for her. She promised me a discount on them, so I hope that I'm all set in that area. I can't wait to meet my new little boy

| Congrats on your stud!!! clean his tummy often cuz male pee is really stinky. My boy thankfully doesnt hump any objects. Whenever I hear of anyone talking about boys and their humping, I get the vision of that little chihuahua on "meet the parents" that humps that little squeek toy ROFLMBO. That was the funniest thing I have ever seen and gets me every time. |
