Stud Question Can someone educate me on what the norm is for studding. My question is, is it healthy and normal to stud your male at least five times a week, or daily? It seems excessive to me and would just like some input from reputable experienced breeders. Thanks. Elaine

My boys are maybe used once a year. Only using them twice on one female with one day inbetween. Daily, 5 times a week......all the time is a bit excessive...any reputable breeder that I know do not use their studs as you stated above. Using a dog that for nothing but studding is detremental to the dog's mentality. I have witnessed one such dog used in this manner and the rehabilitation for this dog was extensive. So sad when he was rehomed, they had to put the dog in Agility to keep his mind off of sex. Even after he was nuetered, the mind set was imprinted in his mind.

Yes, IMHO - everyday for 5 days is excessive. Norm is what Mary told you - breed twice with a day in between. For the owner of the bitch - you have to know better of when her delievery date is - not a range of a week or more. Also when a stud is used this much his numbers go way down and useless to breed this much. Now some people use AI and then it would not matter to the male, but not good to have such a long range of due date for the female. I hope this helps.

Thank You. Thank you for your input. I'm trying to understand good and bad breeding. The input of those experienced helps me. Common sence said it was excessive, but I am not a breeder. Thanks again. Elaine

To the OP -- I can't imagine the sperm count would be high enough to produce very effectively if they are doing it that often! That is probbly why you hear of some paying for stud fee and then only getting one pup or worse, having to go back the next heat because it didn't take.

I have sold and bought stud service many times...I never liked using a male who has been used without a 7 to 10 days break between bitches...over used males tend to produce more males in my experince. Over using a stud shortens his breeding life...many lose interest long before they should. I found it best to use a male once a month, sometimes twice IF I had two of my bitches in season in a month...then at about 6 to 7 yrs..neuter and give them to a friend as a pet...never had a male returned because he did not make a good pet...almost all stopped marking within 6 to 12 mos...belly bands were needed for that time period...none showed interest in bitches once neutered for about 6 months.. I used a male of mine at 13 yrs of age...he produced 4 girls...in his breeding life I used him about 6 times per year.

I thought the AKC required sires to not be over 12 years of age, but I could not find it just now in a quick AKC.org search. Some pages were "unavailable" right now, probably doing maintenance. So, maybe I just could not access the right page. I do remember reading minimum and I thought maximum ages though for registration. Was that a problem?

| I know I'm not suppose to be on YT while at work. I'm so glad I broke the rules this time.
