| A question about a non-yorkie breeder. I have a friend who bought two pit bull puppies a few weeks ago. When he got them they were six weeks old, I told him that was way too young but hadn't thought about it because we don't talk much. Well, he updated me today on the situation. He had given them their first round of shots at nine weeks, he used a five-way vaccine he got at Farmer's Exchange (I think that's like a Southern States, if you're familiar with those stores). A week or so later the little boy puppy started acting sick and dizzy, and then he died a few days later. The little girl didn't show any symptoms at all and he just found her dead a day or two ago. When he bought the dogs, the breeder apparently had seventeen puppies for sale (from two large litters I think??). He said he contacted her, to tell her what had happened (and ask for his money back, but he only spent $200 so its really more about his broken heart than the money). Apparently she blamed him for the deaths and refused a refund. I told him this breeder sounded like she was running a puppy mill and he needed to talk to his lawyer about some way to get her shut down, but I really don't know what else to tell him. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Last edited by JessicaT; 10-20-2010 at 04:15 PM. Reason: to be more clear |

| im so sorry it maybe from the vaccination, it maybe a virus that they brought..should really have an autopsy done.. the "breeder" may or may not be a PM if she only has 2 females and they both came into heat at the same time..it wouldnt make her a pm..not saying she is ethical or not ethical..just never great to assume i know my females all go into heat together again i am so sorry about ur friends puppies |

| Yes, I can see how an autopsy would be helpful. If he could find out how they died, he can find out whether it was shoddy breeding that caused the deaths or whether they just picked something up from his yard. |

| Puppies at 6 weeks old... I have heard six weeks is the normal for a large breed puppy to leave it's dam. Large breed puppies mature faster than toy breeds. Anyway, if your friend got the puppies at 6 weeks old. He vaccinated them at 9 weeks? He had them 3 weeks. Whatever happened, did not happen because of the breeder. That is too long after he picked them up. If they had died a week after getting his babies...maybe. But, there is also other factors to consider. Many people who are buying large breed puppies...seem to be dragging them to every Tom, Dick and Harry's house they know. If these puppies had not had vaccinations prior to your friends at 9 weeks of age. They could have been exposed to sooooo much in that 3 weeks. If your friend had ever had a puppy die of Parvo in his house... that could have done it. Obviously, the puppies had been away from the bitch long enough to lose her immunities that she had given them through her milk. I just had this happen to a friend. Her bitch quit nursing a litter at 4 weeks. She didn't give the first shot until 8 weeks. She has so far lost 1/2 the litter, and not at the same time. The vet told her all puppies should be vaccinated within 2 weeks of quitting nursing. That is why they recommend 6 week shots. I am sorry for your friend. but, all puppies should be vaccinated at 6 weeks of age. If there is a question on whether they were or weren't. I hate too...but, I always give them another one. No necropsy, no clue... as to what really killed them. I would not be throwing stones at the breeder though. It is a little unfair. There is also a distemper going around that is pretty harsh, I here. And, there is always show crud. There are so many things that can kill puppies...you just cannot blame the breeder without a necropsy to prove she is at fault. And, tell your friend it is not a good idea to be bashing the breeder without medical "proof" as to why they died. She could get him on slander. They could have even gotten into a household cleaner or anything. And, some bitches do all come into heat at the same time if you have more than one. And, I am almost certain Pit Bulls have larger litters than Yorkies. I have a friend that just had a litter of 16 Great Danes. One bitch! Does that make her a puppy mill? She only has the one dog... YorkieTalk Newbie! | i am sorry to hear that. did the breeder vacinate the puppy at six weeks, cuz sometimes breeders will do the same and vaccinate them at six weeks, which sometimes...if you vaccinate them again to early it can overdose them....it is an very scarey thing..i use to breed golden retrievers....i use to tell my people to wait until they were 12 weeks because they were already vaccintated at 6, but i also didn't send my pups home until they were 8 weeks. the two extra weeks they learn a lot from the mom..and in my situation dad also..all my pups were potty trained before they left..and it was the parents that potty trained them.. i still believe six weeks is too early, but also some large breeds the puppies can be ready, but they also still miss a lot stuff they can learn from the parents. |

| If your friend got no health guarantee or written agreement, then there is not much he(?) can do about the situation. It sounds like maybe it was due to complications from the vaccine. Either way, if no autopsy was performed, there is no way to know for sure if it was due to a genetic issue that was a result of poor breeding, or the vaccination, or something else altogether. It's very unfortunate, but it seems like the most that will amount from this is a hard lesson learned for your friend. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Did your friend get the pups here in Georgia? If so, he's pretty much out of luck. The laws around here favor the breeder and we have nothing even remotely resembling puppy lemon laws. The lack of regulation around here was one of the reasons I chose to go the rescue route instead of supporting the byb's that are rampant here.
