MD YTCA Breeder Check So I finally followed YT members' advice and contacted a number of breeders on the YTCA referral list. I've talked to 2 so far: Cheryl Lidie in Darnestown, MD and Heiddy Tucker in Dundalk, MD Does anyone have any experience with either of them? Well, based on my phone conversations with them, the 2 women couldn't have been more different. Cheryl was very talkative (I could hardly get a word in). She said that she has 2 pups that will be ready in Nov but she also had an 8 month old who she wanted to show but got too big. That was the one that she thought would be better for me because I said that I wanted a calm lapdog. There were 2 things that I was a bit concerned/confused about: 1. She told me that she puts her dogs in diapers and kept telling me what a wonderful and convenient way it is to prevent accidents. Is that a common practice? 2. She said that her husband and her work full-time so that the dogs are alone during the day (which is why she uses the diapers). Is it common for show breeders to work outside their home most of the time? Does that have an affect on the dogs' socialization? Heiddy Tucker was polite but not extremely talkative. I just asked her some pertinent questions and asked her to keep me updated on the litter that she's expecting. Anyway, I would appreciate any advice that you guys may have, esp if you've had some personal experience with these breeders. Thanks!

I was a member of the YTCNC for many years before moving to FLorida..I know all the club members... Both are good breeders, but I would never buy from a breeder who is gone all day..JMO. You have just scratched the surface contacting YTCA breeders in your area...look around..talk to to everyone. My Yorkies are trained to wee pads...not a fan of diapers. Spayed and neutered pets seldom need them...

Donna, of course there are exceptions..you are one I am sure. I guess I have my ideas because I boarded so many breeders Yorkies over the years...pups they had sold for pets.

I started boarding Yorkies for anyone who took one of my puppies, never liked to see them in a kennel...well, you know how those things bloom...wasn't long and I was caring for many pets breeders had sold to people..and I also took care of breeders dogs due to vacations, illness, overwhelmed etc...many live alone and have no one to help...you would be surprised how isolated some breeders are with no backup.. I do not place a puppy with anyone who works...I know it sounds unfair to most..but there are lots of breeders who do, so big deal my few babies are placed with stay at home or retired people etc...or if they take them to day care..I had daycare at one time..no more. I have been in Yorkies kennels, show and pet where the breeder had 25 to 40 Yorkies and they were out all day...I have no clue how they did it...and to look at the puppies/adults they were not doing it well... My thoughts do not apply to you or any of the reputable breeders here...

Some breeders work, some stay home. I'd prefer a breeder that works with one liter a year over one that stays home with 3 liters a month. I think it's ok for a breeder to work. If you are set on a calm lap dog you may try an adult. A young one, just mature. Then you'll be sure to get what you are looking for. Expecting a lap dog and not getting one will be a huge disappointment. This is something that happens with people getting our breed. Only select few are true lap dogs. You could end up with a wild child. If anyone PM"s you to buy a puppy I would never reply. If they are trying to sell puppies privately, most likely it's not a good situation. | |
