YorkieTalk Newbie! | my dog is acting strangely and we think she is pregnant for her first time. hi my name is olivia and my dog echo is acting very strangely for the past week. she was bred on 23 of june, unfortunately there was an accident on the day in question which left them a short amount in time in which to have bred. so there are questions of her only having a phantom. but for the past week she has become very territorial over her favourite toy 'mumbo' and growling, snapping and barking increasingly while she is lying beside it when we come close to her. is this normal for a pregnant dog to do?? she also seems to be nesting. please reply as we dont know what to do. thanks |

I'm assuming as you wanted to bred her, you probably have your whelping box and supplies all ready. If not get them ready Gl

| This--or an emergency spay after the "accident"--are things that you should have considered on June 24, not just now when she is so close to her whelp! Yes, the behavior you have described seems very typical for a pregnant female close to delivering. Have you not had her examined by a vet yet to determine if she is in fact expecting and since you knew there was a possibility that she was? If not, you need to do that ASAP. They will need to take an xray to determine the size of the pups she is carrying--it will tell the size and give the vet an idea as to if she may need a c-section or if they look like she can free whelp them. In any event, she WILL need your assistance if and when she delivers the litter. As you have left yourself little time to prepare and research the how-to's, your best option is going to be to see if your vet would be willing to assist your, or to find an experienced breeding mentor who would be willing to help you out. |

| Take her in for a an exray. It could be a false pregnancy. However, she was bred so there is a possibility that she whelping is on the horizon. Her abdomen may not get big if there is one. She needs to see the vet. If she is not pregnant, have her spayed. Breeding is serious business with this breed. Let us know what happens. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | I am no breeder, but you should know that breeding Yorkies is very dangerous, as you could lose your female or pups. If in fact she has conceived, her due date is fast approaching and you have very little time to prepare. You can expect pups anywhere from 21st to the 25th, if the date you have given is the first and only time she was bred. If she was bred before that date and gone unnoticed, she will deliver before then. Do you have any experience with whelping yorkies? Do you have a mentor or someone you can call that is well versed with small breeds? You should contact your Vet ASAP and get her in to be seen. Getting a Xray is very important as others have stated. It will be very informative in letting you know the size and number of pups and can also help determine if she able to have a free whelp. Here is a website that is very informative. Whelping Puppies, Breeding Dogs There are many great breeders on YT that will offer assistance. If you will do a search of older posts you will find alot of great information on the whelping process, before and after care, signs of complications, and what to do should they arise. Good luck with your girl. YorkieProud |

| there isnt alot i can add to that, its all Very good advise. they are right about your timing though, this should have all been happening weeks ago- if it was me i would have had my girl at the vet for an xray as soon as it was possible so i could be ready and make sure shes ok... when you take her to the vet let us know how it goes; i hope all goes well for you both!

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Echo not in the family way Hey everyone, Many thanks for all the information but our Echo is not expecting and was having a phantom pregnancy. She has come back to normal. What confused us was we didn't think that she was going to have pups so when she was acting strange we wondered what was up. Next time we will be better organised.: |
