Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm not a breeder - but the fact your Mama has a lack of appetite, possible diarrhea and isn't nursing - a visit asap to the vet would be the right thing to do. How is she today? How is the little pup?

| I am also not a breeder, but I believe a new mother not eating and having such issues should be at the vet NOW They can go downhill SO quickly and the pups will suffer as well. I hope that your baby will be okay

As far as the pup, the closest things to mother's milk is Goat's Milk, mixed with equal parts of distilled water and a bit of Karo Syrup.

| I am sorry to hear you lost one of your babies. How is the little surviving pup doing today? I pray mom and baby are doing better. Sometimes the milk is a little slow coming in but since there is only one pup I would imagine she should get plenty of milk. The main thing is that you don't want him to wear himself out trying to nurse. Here is an interesting article that might help you some: http://www.showpapillons.com/formula.htm I have used the recipe in paragraph 10 on several occasions and I feel it really helps with tiny puppies. You can also give some to the momma. Make sure the momma does not get too hot or that will effect her milk production. As for the diarrhea the mom has, if it does not clear up with the pumpkin, you might want to ask the vet what would be safe to give her. Did the vet diagnose the puppy that died with a heart problem? I am just curious about what kind of heart problem? Was the mom in labor a long time? Was the mom given a shot of oxytocin to increase her contractions? Any input you have might be valuable for others going through a difficult labor. |

| we had been to the vet and he said that diarrhea is common and not to worry but i do worry she is one of my babys .the pumpkin helped with tha as far as the eating gos it turns out that she has a bit of an infection and he out her on antibotics but she still has very little milk but he says that as soon as she is feeling better it will come in .but still havin trouble with her intake so we are offering small amounts of different things as she is very picky right now ,nornmally she acts like she is never fed lol.as for the wee little guy he is a gem im feeding him every hour and then he is feeding any small amount mom may have he is gaing a bit of weight .he is the only pup i have ever had that doesnt cry when hungry in fact he never crys ,so i really have to be on my game to make sure he is fed on time. he is taking about 1and a half cc of formula every hour . i will post some pics as soon as i have a bit more time

What antibiotic did the vet put your momma on? Some antibiotics will effect their appetite and also cause them stomach problems. The momma should be given a probiotic supplement like Bene-bac since she is on antibiotics. You really need to try everything possible to get the momma do eat some solid dog food. Just giving her the puppy formula could cause her to get diarrhea again. What dog food was she on prior to having puppies? | |

| The amoxicillin is a safe antibiotic so she should do okay on that. As for the eating, my feelings are that is it important to keep the mom on the same basic diet she was on during pregnancy. The only thing I do different is I start giving them a little more canned food mixed with their dry puppy food once they have puppies. I like canned Pedigree puppy food or canned Pedigree Healthy Digestion. I will hand feed my mommas the first few days since they don't like leaving the whelping box that much. If you start feeding them a lot of foods they are not use to then it can upset their digestive system. I will give my mommas Nutri-cal a couple times a day until their appetite picks up. I also give them 1/2 of a Doc Roy's Healthy Bone twice a day once they have their pups. I make sure the momma eats about 4 good meals a day, the last meal is around 10 p.m. I think your momma just needs some time to recovery from her c-section, she has been through a lot. It sounds like you have everything pretty much under control. I hope the momma starts feeling better and I hope the babies continue to do well. |
