| A question about how many times.... What is the ideal amount of times to let your bitch tie with a stud if you are breeding them? I read on a website called Jon-An's Yorkshire Terriers that if you just let them do it as much as they want, some of the pups will be conceived much later than others and can be born premature. |

| It's not a good idea to let them 'do it as much as they want.' In addition to risking injury, the males sperm count is only going to be able to stretch so far. They key would be to accurately time the controlled breedings by accurately determining when the female is the most fertile. Progesterone testing to determine that is very beneficial. 2-3 ties within a span of 2-4 days should be more than sufficient. Curious as to why you'd be asking this now as it appears your girl is already expecting. Just future reference, I assume? Given that her breeding was successful, how did you time her breedings? (# of tries, days, etc) What worked for you? Some opinions differ on the latter part of your question, regarding the premature puppy aspect. But from everything I have ever learned, that is one issue you hope to eliminate by not spacing the ties out over a long period of time. Last edited by BamaFan121s; 07-28-2010 at 11:16 AM. |

| Yeah, she's already expecting. The vet did an x-ray on her on day 48, he counted three but said there could be more. She was 7 and a half pounds before pregnancy, now weighs 9.1 as of Saturday. I think there are more than three. The spinal cords werent very ossified and were hard to see. I was just worried, because I research all day long so I can be as prepared as possible, and then I read on this website that I basically did it wrong. I let them tie once a day for seven days. I really really don't want any premature pups. |

| The breeder who sold me her stud (Simon, the daddy) is helping me out, we keep in touch via e-mail mostly but I'll be able to give her a call when Layla goes into labor. She lives pretty close too, about 20 minutes away. |

You should never just let them breed a lot. It should be controlled and not done often. I breed once and skip a day and breed again. That is all I do. This way my time is pretty much focussed and lower your chances of premeeies.

| I'm glad I know all this now so I can be prepared. Her due date is August 7th, but a vet tech told me when we got X-Rays that his dogs never made it past day 60. I hope she goes the whole 63 days. I already bought a tiny bottle, I'm waiting til this weekend to go to the health food store and get some Goat's Milk. I also bought some Nutri-Drops, because a lot of people on yorkietalk say it works really well for newborns. I only have two things left to get for my whelping kit: Some plain dental floss and some oral cal plus (or an equivalent calcium supplement --- any recommendations?). |

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...g-recipes.html RECIPES FOR SUPPLEMENTING* NEW BORN PUPPIES - bottle-feeding and hand-raising newborn orphaned puppies, and whelping supplies - from Chinaroad Lowchens of Australia Best of luck. Be sure you have a whelping box, keep mom and babies seperate from all other dogs and children. Also be sure you can keep them warm - never leave a pup on a heating pad directly, it will burn them.
