| Dont know anything about breeding! Well I'm in this section b/c i have been thinking about getting Edward a companion but he is not neutered and if i do get him a companion i would want her to have babies of her own with Edward. My fear is this how tough would it be if they mate and she gets pregnant? How much does a c-section cost? If the girl was Edwards size (5 1/2 lbs) about how many pups do you think she would be expecting? what would be the best age for the female to try and mate them? when they are doing it should i supervise? what can i do if something goes wrong when they do it? Any other things I should know? please feel free... Thank you fellow YTers in advance....

Get all the needed health checks... heart, eyes, knees, liver, I make sure they are trained and have thier CGC on them...never hurts to proven in writing they have a good temperment. Then of course after all of that and a they are both two and it all checks out then expensive stuff happens... no wait that is the get them shown.... grooming bows, handlers , travel, chasing a major..... but it fun. Oh yes an tow years worth of heats before you can bred to put up with moods of both dogs and a male that pees and stacks the girl cause she maybe in heat. so now we have pups vet checks, worming, docking, c section, long nights if you have to extra feed. Hopefully it a small litter so mom can feed them all herself and she comes through ok, then after they get moving it puppy food and clean up in the puppy pen every waking minute of the day. Then 12 weeks later it is the hurt as they have to go to new homes and the hope in the 12 weeks you have had them that they learn enough to be ok in the world and then the worry if the new owners will look after them and love them. Breeding is not about the cost of it.... It is about the end product being lovable, healthy, and love. JL

Breeding yorkies is much more complicated than you think and unless you are committed to dedicating hours and days and weeks and months and years to research, it isn't worth it. You could lose the girl and all her puppies. And how sad would Edward be then? To answer all your questions, please buy and read Ann Seranne's Joy of Breeding your Own Show Dog before even getting the puppy. This isn't something you just do on the side. Breeding Yorkies is a lifestyle, not a hobby. A sterilized male and female live together very peacefully and they become great friends. If they are sterilized, there are no worries about watching them, their chances for lots of illnesses are reduced and you save thousands.

| It is very expensive for a c section also vetting mom and pups not to mention time consuming. Just enjoy your boy as a pet. We also already have too many people breeding and bringing unnecessary puppies in this world. Leave the breeding to those prepared for it

| Either you want your guy to have a companion to keep him company, or you want to breed....figure out which one is your true desire as they do not exactly go hand in hand. My advice is, that if you are considering breeding and want to go about it in an ethcial manner, that you find a mentor to work with first, BEFORE you get your female. Breeding ethically is pretty serious business, not something that should be done just for kicks, or for the experience and definately not something you just pick up on as you go. Working with an experience breeder FIRST will give you a front row seat to what you would be getting yourself into and will answer your questions and let you know what to expect way more than any answer on this forum could. It's a very rewarding endevour if you go about it the right way, and potentially very dangerous if you don't. There have been a few instances of the latter where people 'got in over their head' and had some pretty sad results. Take the time to look over them and consider the possibilities. |

My fear is this how tough would it be if they mate and she gets pregnant? Very tough. But at least you are looking into what a serious decision this is. How much does a c-section cost? It can vary widely depending upon complications, and of course where in the country that you live. If the girl was Edwards size (5 1/2 lbs) about how many pups do you think she would be expecting? what would be the best age for the female to try and mate them? when they are doing it should i supervise? what can i do if something goes wrong when they do it? Any other things I should know? please feel free... You've been given lots of good advice here, and there are more "stickies" in the library and in this section about breeding that you will want to read. I would like to also support neutering your boy, and if money is an issue for you then perhaps look at a rescue for your girl. There are lots of lovely lady Yorkies looking for a good home. Breeding is not for the inexperienced, you put your girls life at real risk during mating and whelping.

| OK Thank you soooooo much everyone! Alright i think im just gonna leave the breeding to the proffessionals! Im gonna start looking into female rescues eventhough i have done it b4 and i can only find older girls but i want her to be younger then Edward so that he can help with her growing up. So i will be looking for the rescues and also saving up money so that if i cant find a rescue then ill just go to a breeder, i was so uninformed when i got Edward that i am almost sure he came from some puppy mill i never got to see the parents never got to speak to the breeder but this time i will do it right b/c I am definitely against the lifestyle that is given to the dogs coming from puppy mills it is so sad! And i also wanna support the ppl who are doing it right and with lots of TLC.... Thank everyone for the great advice.

| The other choice is find a mentor and learn and then go do. There are some wonderful breeders that are willling to show you the ropes if you give them a hand when things get crasy and they can when there are pups on the ground. Then you have a chance to learn if you think you can manage it and what to do. Trust me learning under fire is not fun...been there done that. JL
