YorkieTalk Newbie! | Questions about my dog in heat Hi everyone. I'm not breeding my yorkie and don't want to be. Honestly, when I took her to the vet after first rescuing her a few months ago, I was told that she had been spayed. So imagine my surprise yesterday when the groomer said to me, "you know that Josie is in heat, right?" I had no idea! My biggest question is what's the typical length of time for a yorkie to be in heat? I don't know if it matters, but she's small (6 lbs) and the vet guesses that she's about 5-6 years old. Should I expect a lot of bleeding? Do the diapers work? Is there anything special that I should be doing for Josie? I'm keeping her away from all male dogs! Thanks very much! |

Now in response to your groomer telling you she's in heat. Question did the groomer observe that there was bloody show? If if not, the possibility exists that she has been spayed, however, a bit of ovarian tissue could have been left in tact. This would cause all the signs, except bloody show, of a female in heat. Having an estrogen test on her, as well as an ultra-sound would reveal whether she is in tact.

YorkieTalk Newbie! | It lasts that long? With bleeding the whole time? Yes, I noticed a pea-size drop of blood on her blanket last night so I'm pretty confident that she is, in fact, in heat. I googled it and thought that the heat might last 7 days, give or take a few. |

1 week/7 days coming in; vulva turning pink and swelling. 1 week/7 days in: Showing Color - Bleeding 1 week/7 days going out: When she is breedable. Are you sure the bleeding isn't a result of blood in her urine..I would suggest having the vet check her.....But, since you've already stated that you don't want to breed her, and really shouldn't because of her age.....she can be spayed at this point.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I would keep her up for 28 days. I had one to breed on 24th day and went on to have pups. I know the exact days she started to so it was a shock. Now I always go with 28 days better safe than sorry. Mine do not bleed the whole time. It seems the first week is the worst. Then it turns a staw color discharge. Sometimes they will spot on and off.

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thanks for the information. Truthfully, I'm most concerned because I'm going on vacation on Friday and am leaving my dog with friends for 10 days. I'm trying to determine now how much of a burden my dog will be on them next week while I'm gone. I wish I knww when she went into heat and what they should expect. |
