| Puppy food...stop? Ok, I am getting conflicting answers... Do I continue to keep Juliet on puppy food up until birth or do I put her back on adult food 10 days (now) before EDD? And then the calcium...yes during pregnancy or no? If not, when to start? Is it necessary? Multivitamin?? There are so many different answers on here, from another breeder I've been talking to and from my vet...just want to make 100% sure....how do you know what is the right answer? Thanks!!

When pregnant moms are about 5 weeks along I start them on Puppy Kibbles food. I leave them on puppy food until the pups are weaned. They also get 2 small meals a day of soaked kibbles with small amount of canned puppy food, sometimes I add a little cheese, cottage cheese, hamburger or a little boiled egg on top. I increase the soft meals to 3-4 times a day while they are nursing. I NEVER add any calcium supplements before whelping. Supplements are fine to use after pups are born. Personally, I don't use the calcium supplements to often, if I do use it it's 1/2 tums twice a day sprinkled on the food. I've never had a calcium problem. I've never used Multivitamins. I also never give or use any chemicals on pregnant moms like heartworm or flea meds. Hope this help. Last edited by yorkiegirl2; 04-17-2010 at 05:21 PM. | |

| I keep my females on dry Chicken Soup puppy food throughout their pregnancy. I add a little canned Pedigree Healthy Digestion or Pedigree Chopped Chicken to the dry food. After the pups are born I give the nursing mommas 1/2 Doc Roy's Healthy Bones in the morning and 1/2 at bedtime. The Healthy Bones are comparable to the Pet-cal but my dogs like the Healthy Bones better. You can get either of these from Revival Animal Health Products. After the pups are born I keep the mommas on the same diet they were on prior to whelping except I give them some canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice puppy food with their dry puppy food. If you have a momma that is a picky eater you can add a little yogurt, cottage cheese or a scrambled egg to their diet. Mine love egg noodles so I always add a few of them to their meal. I sometimes have to hand feed the mommas the first few days since they don't want to leave their babies. Once the pups are born it is essential that the momma eats about 4 times a day. The last big meal should be a bedtime since it is usually during the night that the pups really put a strain on the mommas calcium supply. |

| Per my repro vet; if your girl is on a high quality dog food, it is not necessary to switch to puppy food. Just increase the feedings around the the 5th week . But, I've also, switched to puppy food at the last trimester. The trick for me was to insure they were eating a high quality food and increasing their feedings. I give calcium supplements with litters that have 3 or more puppies. The thing to remember is that to discuss the proper dosage of any calcium supplement with your vet. As they will base the dosage on your girl's weight. Calcium in order to be effective must have the correct dosage of vitamin D to absorb properly. I'm not sure if Rob Roy's Healthy Bones has that correct ratio (BJH has probably discussed this with her vet and could better answer that). According to my vet PetCal does have the correct ratio. Scrambled egg also has natural calcium, so an egg a day is recommended. No calcium during pregnacy, this would inhibit the bodies natural production of calcium and induce eclampsia.....Wait until the litter is born.
