| To bath or not to bath.... Hi Everyone, I was hoping I could get a little helpful advise. I recently found out that my brother and ex-husband had bred their yorkies. Being silly people, they honestly thought that they could just leave the dogs alone and nature would take care of things. Since neither of them are home very often, I flipped when I found out. Being the type of person I am, I scolded them both and confiscated the dam, Rosie. (It wasn't that hard. They thought I was foolish, but where glad not not have to be responsible for her.) So... I quickly read up everything I could on whelping. Her due date was April 18th. But SUPRISE!!!! I became a puppie Momma... Grandma... guardian... yesterday! (I'm not sure what I am to these little guys, except the only responsible human ) I had the vet prepared, but Rosie did fantastic. I now have four beautiful babies, two boys and two girls. Mommie and puppies are doing fantastic. But here is my question... Everything seems good. I have Rosie and the puppies scheduled to go into the vet tomorrow for their check-ups. But .. and I know this sounds shallow.... Rosie is so stinky! I've read that I can't bath her for a week. I have tried wiping her down with scent free baby wipes, but it just isn't doing anything. How wet can I get her and what is safe to use to help clean her up? I am trying to make sure I do everything by the book and make this a pleasant experiance for all of us. Any advise would be greatly apriciatated!

| I'm not sure of an answer on your question, someone should be able to help out there. I imagine mama would probably feel better with a bath after all her hard work. I do want to say CONGRATULATIONS GRANNY!!! And BIG cudos to you for taking charge of the situation and watching out for the new mama and her babies. Give those men a slap upside the head from me. Can't wait to see pics. |

| Kudos to you for stepping up and taking care of this little girl. And congrats on becoming a grandma! I have often seen it stated that you shouldn't bathe a female just after whelp. I have always given mine a 'quick bath' afterwards. Once the pups had all fed and eaten. I would rinse and wash just her bottom, using baby wash and make sure she is dry and warm before putting her back with the pups. But that's just me. Never had any issues. In my mind, 1) gals are a mess and it's gross 'back there' when all is said and done and 2) I can't imagine that not cleaning them up is sanitary and bacteria free. |

| I usually give a quick bath and a blow dry, right after the last pup and before I put her in to rest and enjoy her babies. I know that they are canines, but somehow I put a human spin on it and think about how I felt after giving birth. I usually give a full bath after a week, and base it how willing she is to leave her pups.

| Glad to see others confirming that this was OK. It was one of those things I always played by ear. Good to see I wasn't committing a feaux pas of sorts. |
