| Stud Contract Questions Hello everyone...I have had a lifelong love affair with Yorkies. I am considering following my passion to become a breeder. I do not want to go into champion niche because my love has always been for the average 5-8lb Yorkie. To begin we all have to have a first litter which I have had. I watched 100 videos, talked to breeders and vets. Thank God I was prepared but nothing is like whelping your first. We are keeping the three in the family. I will not offer any puppies until I decide Ive made a lifelong commitment to be a real breeder. Here is my question: What is a typical contract for stud for akc and non? Is there somewhere I can go to learn? I have had a personal experience here in San Diego which feels like a scam or con. If my mom were to only have one puppy does that go to the stud owner or payment of 2500 if it is a female? Smells funny! Please be kind. We all start out somewhere. I can assure you I love this breed more than anything. The money is so far down the list of importance. Thank you |

| Anyone i know that studs their male gets pick of the litter or they charge a set sum paid day of breeding. so in the case of only 1 pup it would rightfully belong to stud owner

| I have used many nice champions of show breeders and never once asked for a litter pick or in the case of one pup, to pay the price of a puppy. I was allowed twice to pay the stud fee and keep the singleton. Don't expect this type deal with anyone in it for the money. Quite frankly, I would not deal with anyone I did not know well and were not know to be fair and ethical. |

When you are attempting to breed as a the owner of the female and looking for that stud that will improve your girls faults. Your primary concern is the health of the stud (well both). And I'm sure you already know this. Both should have all the necessary tests performed. Payment of stud fee is very dependent on what has been agreed upon both owners; it can be a pick of the litter (and if it was decided before hand that that was the agreement; one puppy is counted as a litter) or a stud fee ($2,500) wow!, is the stud a well sought after Champion that has produced Champions..... The stud owner should be willing to take any pups you can't place and/or pups that have been placed but can't be kept by their owners. They are also responsible to help you with the whelp. Now your statement of not wanting to get into the Champion niche.....Mmmmmm. If you aren't breeding to improve the breed and to improve the breed, then you shouldn't be breeding. Please read the below article. It is posted in the YT Library. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-answered.html

I always feel I am just as responsible for the litter as the bitch owner...and will help place any pups, whelp the litter and whatever it takes to insure all goes well. |

To answer your question about the puppy. It does not matter. It depends on the contract if they paid stud fee or first pick. First pick is only if that's all there is. Smells funny? Well happens all the time. There is only one kind of Yorkshire terrier. Not a kind different for different people. How can you say you love the breed more than anything if you are breeding them. It's sad. | |

| Can I add a question here? So when one is looking for a quality stud (which I am), and you ask about things like knees etc...it seems silly to just take their word for it. Is there some documentation that I should be asking for esp. in regards to their knees? Every stud owner I've talked to has assured me they have "had no problems" with knees. But I would like to hear that from a vet check. How do most people with girls and no stud handle this? Thanks so much. Fortunately I do not have my girls in heat yet....just trying to be prepared and know who I want to use ahead of time. deb |

So, much goes into finding the right breeding pair.....Not only picking a quality stud, one that will compliment your female, but also one that has the potential based on both of their pedigrees to correct those faults that a female has without bringing in faults that one cannot accept.
