Neutering a Breeding Male Do neutered males that have previously been used for breeding have the same "urges" as before? Is it possible to neuter one and keep him as a pet around intact females?

I really have no idea, but my answer would be yes, but not as powerful. Smokers who quit still have the same urges. Some males do not know that they have been fixed!

A fellow breeder I know has a previous stud male that has been neutered. In the beginning after the neuter he was still very interested and would try to mount and mate. Now a few years later, he still pays attention but does not mount them or anything like that. The marking does not stop unless you work very hard and watch them every minute but it can be done.

They lose interest with time..and my placed males wore belly bands and turned into very good companion dogs...some were well trained and did not mark.

| I have fostered retired breeder males who have been neutered once they get to me and after time the urge does go away.....and they make wonderful pets....yes they can be hard to train but it can be done with time and patience...

Thanks everyone for your thoughful responses! I was more-so referring to a breeder neutering a breeding male and then keeping him as a pet from that point on. I am getting ready to retire my 3 year old because I am working on my lines, and I have a better quality 6 month old male that I am watching and training (hopefully) for show. I can't imagine my 3 year old going anywhere else, he is a momma's boy and is very attached to me. I suppose I am not really sure what to do. Would he be happier neutered and staying with his mom (I have had him since he was a baby), but being around unspayed females when he has bred in the past? Or would he be happier adjusting to a new home (which I am positive would take a LONG time for him) where there are no unspayed females?
