Default Do it yourself vacines

Hi, right now we have two litters of pups 7 weeks and 8 weeks old. In the past we took them to the vet for shots and worming. My wife wants to save money and do it ourself.
I would appreciate and advice before we decide. My wife is a CNA and knows how to give shots, it seems pretty easy to worm following directions.
Thanks, Roger

I don't how many pups you are talking about, but by the time you buy the vaccines, syringes, and wormers--it may be almost the same prce as having the vet do the shots.

Default wormer

We have 5 total pups. It will be more cost effective to do the worming ourselves. Not sure if as effective though. Past litters vet wormed at first visit at 7/8 weeks then again at 12 weeks.
Should we do the adults too?

I would never give my own puppies shots but that is because I hate shots but besides a vet being trained (I understand about your wife) it also gives the vet time to look at each puppy to see how they are progressing.

I also think you had better study up on puppy lemon laws because California has been somewhat progessive in going after poor breeders. You could possibly end up in small claims if you cannot prove anything...I don't know but worth it for you to read.

Thanks, good advise and I hate shots too. In the past when we sold the pups we had all vet records of shots and immunizations. If we do it ourselves...well no record other than our word. When we bought our now adults they were vaccined by the breeder or said so. Had one problem with a 12 week female having a parasite 2 weeks after we got her, almost lost her and first diagnosis was parvo, glad it was not that. She has been a great dog since.

If I am in there already having them vet checked it doesn't cost me about $10 more each for the shots.. so it has not been worth it to me.

I worry when shipping shots they may get warm and not be as affective.

go thru revial or upco,..ship on ice can order extra ice

i know here its 34.00 with my vet to examine a litter but 20+ per pup for vaccines...most vets around here are MUCH higher then that ..so i do the exam after i vaccinate them...most office visits are 45+ here and sometimes they charge office visits by the pup and not the litter and charge 27 per vaccine

individually the shots are $3-5.00 ea and the syringes sometimes come free but even if they dont they are just pennies...i can vaccinate a litter for what the vet would charge to vaccinate 1

as for records you remove the stickers from the vial and place them on the medical charts with the dates ive never had a vet not recognize it...i actually have never met a breeder or purchased a puppy from someone who didnt do their own vaccinations to

vaccines dont prevent parasites...all dogs get parasites....

just from my experience and what i ve read i have never heard of a pup passing away from worms...unless it goes untreated for a long time....plus puppies get worms all the time...its very normal even if they have been dewormed it can still happen

WOW...
Too much toxin to run through tiny puppies to suit me and all the vets I have ever dealt with...I start with parasite free bitches and work from there..
Pups get a stool check at 6 weeks..no parasites, no treatment..8 wk and 12 week stool check...no parasites, no treatment.
KNOCK on wood I have not had a positive stool in over 20 yrs...

As to vaccines...most vets today are not accepting a breeder giving vaccines..so they disregard breeders record and start shots all over again...so many pups are being over vaccinated because of this factor.
I advise the breeder giving the 8 week and then the vet giving the 12 shot and a health check...if you are selling at the 12 wk advised aged. I keep mine until all shots, including rabies is given...JMO

nope not over doing it, that is the recommended amount..says so on just about everything...by the vets, by the products...i feel safer making sure im take precautions to keep them free of parasite then waiting for the vet to check...

i my self have never run into a vet who wouldnt recognize the breeders vaccines if they were noted with proof of the vial and the date...and i would also think that in todays economy ALOT of breeders are doing this themselves and the vets will have to just accept it or take a possible lost from a customer..

me as a customer..would not let the vet do unnecessary vaccines to my puppy because he wants to sell his product..if the vet recommends re doing the vaccines then HE is putting the puppy at risk...HE should know the concerns of too many vaccines....

That is why these discussions are so good..it gives lots of points of view and experience.

My experince is this...none of my vets, here and in Md recommmend a worming without a stool..then go from there...if there are no parasites, why treat the pup..?
Since my pups have not had positive stools for decades, we do a routine worming only if I am concerned the new vet will and I perfer to have my vet do it. I talk to ALL my pet owners vets before they take them to find out when and what they do...I will not refuse to place my pup because I do not like a vet, but sometimes I urge changing and have had no problems getting them to do so...

I have had so many pet owners in the last few yrs call me in a panic because the vet wanted to start over...there are vets who refuse to accept a client if they do not adhere to their vaccine policy.
My friend in Riverdale, Md is one..she can not find a vet in her area who will follow the new vaccine protocal..her vet refuses to treat a dog who had breeders shots..they insist on revaccinating...she can not move..so she is stuck...

Lastly, I amazed at the ignorance of some breeders and the vaccines they use..the type, amount and frequancy...

Please do not be offended.... none of this pertains to you as a breeder, it is just my experince.
Shoot..I gave my own shots for 30 yrs...but things are drastically different and I saw my puppies suffer the costs...one vet actually gave a pup of mine all the shots over and it was 5 months...the owner had no clue and called me...so I needed to fix it for my pups...I perfer the vet give the 12 or 16 wk depending on when I let them go...it solved my problem...

As to worming..I have had some wee babies..at 2 wks they are only 6 oz..12 weeks, they may be a pound. I called Gainesville vet school...I was advised to never give a pup under 6 wks wormer with out a stool check..and the tinies should go longer...
Best wishes
