Yorkie Yakker | Heat cycles? I have a ten month almost eleven month old female silky terrier. I havent really known the signs of heat cycles. She just went into her very first heat cycle and she is bleeding but not much. How long does the first heat cycle last on average? Is it normal for their attitudes to change? She went from a relaxed puppy to extremly tense so wont let any dogs including her own mom around her behind is that normal to? |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Hello my name is Carmen and I breed silky terriers, she is young and inexperience, so yes is very normal she is protecting herself. and yes attitute varies a bit while they are in heat, I keep disposable diapers on my girls when in heat, they sell them cheap at walmart. Heat cycle last 21 days minimum, keep her away from any unaltered males for at least 25 days. Let me know if you have any other questions i will be glad to help. hugs, Carmen in nj |

Disposable diapers will not keep dogs away from her. Yorkies bleeding is very minimal and at times you really can't tell there is bleeding unless you blot her after she pees.

Yorkie Yakker | Can I spay her while she is in heat or would it be safer and smarter for me to wait untill shes completly out of heat? And I understand the diapers wont keep her safe shes to young to have puppies and in all honesty I can't financialy handle breeding her I want her to live an long healthy and happy life and if that means spaying her then I will. |

| You need to talk to your vet, find out how familiar he is with spaying toy breeds.......If you don't feel comfortable.....find another vet. You don't want to take chances with your wee one.

| When I was a vet tech - if we spayed any during heat which was very rare - the females will bleed more during surgery is correct. The area is swollen, thus the vessels are larger allowing more blood to flow. My vet would prefer to wait this the heat is over with. It is mess. We used a heat surgerical instrument to close off the vessels to prevent more bleeding. |

| Absolutely, most breeders have 2 or 3 vets that they take their dogs to for different situations or just have back-ups should one not be available.

I got one vet 20 minutes away that is great and charge little, and I have an other one right across the street that is also amazing but charge way more $$$ so i keep her for emergencies and second opinion only. It is also very important to know where is the closest 24/hours emergency clinic just to be on the safe way and not waist time looking for one if you ever need it. | |
