| Need professional opinions please! Maddie is my Biewer. At 6 wks old she weighed 2lbs. 8 months later at 39 wks old she weighs 2lbs 12 oz.. Is this normal? Could something be wrong with her to stunt her growth or has she possibly not hit her growth spurt yet? Any ideas? Her grandmother was 4 lbs at one yr old and is now 7 lbs. Could it be the line she is from? I am not sure when to assume she is full grown. |

| Wow that does seem a littl unusual, but some of them do have late growth spurts. Have you talked to your vet about your concerns. There are some health issues that will cause them to not grow normally. |

| My vet just said she is probably just going to be small. Are there certain tests I should ask him to run? He never said there could be health issues.. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Well, it's far from normal, if you look at the growth charts, it about as far from normal as you can get. I'm a little surprised your vet just said, "It looks like she's going to be small." I'm not really up on illnesses, I'm not a breeder, but I have read that Liver Shunt can stunt dog's growth. Have you had a bile acid test done? Hope it's just genetic, but I would be looking for some more answers, if they are diagnosed early enough, and proper treatment begins, they can lead a relatively normal life.

| She was tested by the breeders vet before I brought her home. Should she be tested again? |

| She had a bile acids test before you brought her home? How old was she? What were the results? |

| I just hung up with the breeder and she is going to get her paperwork and tell me the exact date the test was done, her age at the time and the exact results. She had someone there to pick up a puppy so I will post these when she calls me back. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Were you thinking about using Maddie for breeding, and did the breeder know this?

| Yes I was going to use her for breeding and yes my breeder knew. Why? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I guess I'm overly suspicious, but I'm wondering if the breeder was telling the truth about the test results. It might be wise to have her retested.

| I'm not a professional, but both of my Biewers stopped gaining around 6 months old. They filled out a bit, but havent' gained weight. Only gaining 12 ounces in 8 months is very odd, especially if she was 2 lbs at 6 weeks. If it was me, I would be having her liver functions tested, b/a, and a complete blood panel just to be sure nothing is holding back her growth. JMO

| Make sure she faxes a copy of the BAT results to you or your vet. That is the customary way to do it. She should have done this before you brought Maddie home, not just tell you the test was done and everything was normal. |

| Most of us in the Biewer community know a number of lines that are producing LS...can you tell us who the parents, grandparents are? Your little girl will never get big enough for breeding...but your bigger concern should be why she has not gained weight...At what age did your breeder do the tests? If done too young they don't mean anything and you cannot trust the results. If it were me I would be retesting especially since she is now over 8 months. Did the breeder tell you about the grandmothers weight? Going from 4#'s (1 year) to 7#'s also seems very odd to me..never have seen this in my 6/7 years with the Biewers. In fact we have seen many of them start out large and then stop at about 1 year..

| She said that she is going to mail me the results tomorrow. She is in the bed sick but said she does know that all the puppies were under 25, she just cannot remember the exact number. She is also my friend so I am not concerned that she is lying or trying to deceive me in any way. I do not have Maddie's registration papers yet as I was not worried about it yet and I was going to let her register all of her IBC puppies at one time to save her some money.Again, she is also my friend. The test was done on Maddie when she was 6 wks old which is when her vet and my vet recommend that it is done. I trust her and my vet. Maddie does not show any signs of any illness at all. She is playful and happy. Her father is full grown at 2lbs 15oz and her mother is 4.5 lbs. I now believe that she is just tiny. My 3 yr old daughter loves to carry Maddie around and it terrifies Maddie. She runs when she sees her coming.. Well most people run when Gracie is coming..lol.. Just ask RoscoesMommy42, she has spent 2 weekends with me and she can tell you that my daughter is a handful. It is for that reason mainly that I have decided to rehome Maddie to my aunt who lives 3 streets over from me. She lives alone with her 3 other Yorkies and I know that she will spoil Maddie and Maddie will be happier. She is going to take her to her vet for another opinion but none of us have reason to think Maddie is sick, just little. It is heartbreaking to let her go as I love her very much and the ONLY person I would give her to is my aunt. She will be close by and I will see her often, but she will also not be in constant fear of my "wild child" and I do not have to risk an accidental pregnancy with Bentley. She is to small to be spayed right now per my vet and she is due in her first heat anytime. I didn't mean to get off topic, but I did not want to leave anyone wondering about Maddie. She is loved. |

| The organs aren't developed enough to get an accurate result from a bile acids test done at only six weeks. Dr. Center, its developer, recommends 20 weeks as ideal, but states that a BAT can be done as early as 15 or 16 weeks. I would definitely get her retested, especially if you rehoming her. |
