| I want to become a Breeder, Advice Needed I know how many people post this topic add me to the long list ! Well I really want to become a breeder I think Yorkshire Terriers are an exceptional breed to say the least, I am not trying to become a back yard breeder that mistreats there pet and being misinformed about the breed the standard of which they should be breed, or even basic grooming know how I have done re-search but I dont think thats enough, I need to speak with real breeders whom have experienced the good the bad & the ugly of breeding, I joined "The Yorkshire Terrier Club of Greater NY" http://www.ytca.org/cnewyork.htm & The American Biewer Club if someone in the ny/ct is a breeder that thinks they can advise me on an ongoing basis please let me know. I have lots of question and would like to have someone there That could answer them & help me learn to become a upstandable breeder one day.. Thanks Last edited by ukeka; 10-09-2005 at 06:28 AM. |

| I am not a breeder and don't know anything about it. there are lots of good ones on here. you will get some excellent advice i am sure. I have a pregnant yorkie that is due on the 27th of this month so i will be watching for any advice you receive. in my case this was an accidental pregnancy and will only happen this one time. good luck.

| Well, the clubs you have joined is a great start for you! I'm sure once you become more involved with your clubs, you will meet lots of those who will have tons of info for you. I am breeder and i wouldn't know where to start with you on a forum post....It would look like a book, so my advice is to buy books on breeding, on yorkshire terriers, on genetics, on veterinary care, on grooming, and just read, read and read some more. Just make sure that you realize that you are responsible for any life you bring into this world for it's entire life, even after they leave your nest. Good luck to you and I wish you the best! |

| Try & find a mentor. Someone who's been doing this (responsibly) for a long time. Someone you can develop a 'bond' with and get advice/help from. I'm sure the breeders here will have a lot more advice for you, but that's the #1 most important thing, imo when one is learning to become a breeder. |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | I agree with Summer. Try to find a mentor in your area. Sometimes it isn't that easy but a mentor will offer lots of advice and help.

I dont understand how you became a member of the YTCA of NY if you have never bred before. As well the normal practice is you must be breeding exclusively yorkshire terrier. Finally, you must have two YTCA members sponser you. If you already have your sponsers why are you not asking them to mentor you? Has your application been accepted into the club and have you been voted in? If youve never bred before something is very odd here IMHO

| I have to reply that I have two mentors....I have only been breeding yorkies for 3 years... Retired out of Mini Pins after several years of this breed, Just because I loved the Yorkies and there temperment. I still love the Mini Pins don't get me wrong. But research, research and more reseach on your breed, know what is excepted of your breed... No matter how much you think you know, you will always learn more if you keep a open mind to what other breeders offer up with suggestions. Being a part of a forum like YT can bring some valueable information. What I think is one of the most important part of breeding is to know that your breed (no matter what breed they are) is providing you a service, so you must provide them a service as well. Caring for them is the most important and their well-being. Making sure they are happy and healthy and are still getting a quality life.... Not to be stuck in a row of cages with one purpose. They have feelings and need us to care for them in a very loving way.... This is a 24/7, 365 day a year job... It can be very rewarding and heartbreaking as well... You must be very committed. I am not saying the that watching genetics, standards and all the rest of breeding isn't important, so please don't take this post wrong.... I just think the welfare of your breeders is as important.... And yes mentors are very important.... they have offered me a lot of good information and have helped me tremendously. Be prepared for expenses...breeding can be very expensive. Waking a Vet at 2.00 am isn't cheap.... Be perpared to retire your breeders if they aren't producing good quality off spring or bring in a hereditary disease that they or their parents didn't show in previous breedings. Okay I will stop I get very passionate about breeding and start to ramble and ramble, sorry...

| breeding Regional club membership does not mean you must breed or show. It is a club by club decision. Few people are allowed to join the National club if they do not show, but there are exceptions to every rule. Our Maryland club had one or two non-breeders members..the Gold Coast club here in Florida is mostly all non-breeders..so it varies by state. Perhaps, the Yorkshire Terrier CLub of America has let up on the rules and regs as to showing as a must???? Times change. I did not know the YTCA allowed Biewer breeders. Most are very anti non-standard color breeding...but again perhaps things are changing. I agree, look for a mentor within the club. If you want to join it would be best to get an approved mentor. |

| YorkieRose-I did not know the YTCA allowed Biewer breeders. Most are very anti non-standard color breeding...but again perhaps things are changing. I am assuming this question or comment was for me so I feel it should be addressed. I will probably never be allowed to affiliate myself with the YTCA due to the fact I breed for colors with the Biewers. But that is okay with me my love and passion will never be dictated to me by any group. Sorry if what I posted implied that I was implicating an association with this group. From my orginal post:"I have to reply that I have two mentors...." The reason I have two mentor as I am breeding Yorkies and Biewers, both type of yorkies. I mentor under the breeder in Germany that I have purchased my Biewers through. Since this breed is so new I value her experience and feel I can learn from her experience. I am planning on going to Germany next October (2006) if all goes well. To get acquainted with the breeders there as well as showing some of my Biewers in there home country. I am very excited about the trip, it will be a great learning adventure. Then my second mentor is a breeder of the yorkshire terriers. She has breed yorkies for 45+ years and has very beautiful yorkies. Her daughter was high society in show and they worked very close with one another, before her daughter untimely death. I value her opinion as well. I guess I should have made myself a little clearer on my mentor's the first time I posted, sorry for the confusion....
