| Question for breeders. I purchased a puppy from a breeder a little over a week ago. She is 12 weeks now. Is it common for a puppy to have Giardia? and she also has hookworm and should i inform the breeder?

| Giardia is very common. Not necessarily common for a puppy to come with it, but it does happen. Giardia can lay dormant and stress can bring it on. Once on the meds it will clear up in a hurry. Congratulations and good luck. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Stress situations can bring Giardia up on a puppy, specially a new enviroment, so yes I would say is more common, I never had a baby tested positive for it but a lot of my friends have. medication should clear it up, also hookworms are very common on puppies, they should be dewormed at least twice before they go to their new home and you should have a fecal done when you take your baby to his first vet appt. and congratulations on your new baby.. hugs Carmen in nj |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Giardia isn't uncommon, but then the only dogs I've ever seen with it were the rescues I've taken in from bad breeders. They don't treat for it effectively, nor do they keep clean kennels, so the dogs get re-infected and continue to pass it on to the other pups. The hookworm is a common puppy worm and normally isn't a problem if the breeder treats their dogs. Giardia in some cases is not that easy to treat, also it can be difficult to diagnose as it doesn't always show in a fecal sample. You can and probably should tell the breeder, but my guess is the breeder already knows.

| None of mine have ever had giardia but I know of other people that have bought puppies that had it. Coccidia is also pretty common in puppies. Some will have both. Hookworms can be pretty serious if left untreated. Be sure you do all the followup wormings. I feel you should definitely tell the breeder. |

| Giardia and coccidia shouldn't be - but are pretty common with pet store/puppymill puppies. My Mia came from a petstore and she had both. She had to have 2 treatments to get rid of it. Make sure you clean with ammonia or bleach if she has pooped on any surfaces other than her pee pad. My Max came from a private breeder and has never had any of these problems. Do you have any other pets around? If so make sure they don't come into contact with anything she's pooped on. Congratulations on your new baby! She is a cutie!

| When I first brought Haley home I became concerned because she would not eat, and I seen what looked to be blood in her poop once the day after I brought her home. I took her to our emergency clinic here. They said she tested positive for Giardia, along with a few more problems... anyway I did not know anything about Giardia but I learned it was hard to get rid of and very easy to spread to other puppies. I stressed because I have five other babies at home. I started giving her the medication that Saturday, I never seen any more signs of blood in her Poop. My reg vet did not believe she actually had it, but at any rate she got over it really fast if she did. She eats like a pig now, and is the wild child of all my babies. I hope this is the same with your baby. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Congratulations on your new puppy. The pom puppy I was just fostering had it. She was a puppymill auction rescue. The shelter put her on Panacur which didn't seem to work for her so they switched her to Metrodrozinole (sp) which cleared it up. They had tested her when they first rescued her and she tested negative but 5 days later she had symptoms and tested positive for it. It is pretty quickly cleared up. I would let the breeder know.

Yes it is common... and not as hard to treat it once you know what you need to do. It can remain dormant and show up with the stress of the new home. I have been treating all my dogs with Panacur once a year after we had a puppy diagnosed with it. It sure is hard to get rid of it completely as it can survive the elements and our dogs eliminate on the grass for example. I can not track it down, but just in case we treat and test puppies and dogs frequently. I found out through someone who bought a puppy from us that had been tested already and was negative, after a few days on the new home had loose stools and was re-checked and this time was positive. I am so glad she called me right away at the recommendation of her vet. panacur will also get rid of the hookworms. Coccidia also showed up the same way... someone bought a puppy and called back. That one we tracked down fast ! My vet had a bird specialist working with him at the time, she warned me about coccidia in birds and we had "bird feeders" ... so we were attracting all kinds of birds, who were "eliminating" on the ground were the dogs played ! we had to remove the feeders... i miss the birds but it is the right thing to do. We now test everyone more often but fecals do not always show these critters. Your breeder MUST be glad to receive your call and you will know by their attitude if it was an "occasional" thing or if they do not care ! I used to brag about never having these ... well... i definitely still do as much as i can to avoid it. After my experience i would say: it needs to be looked at carefully. And i can think that in a filthy puppy mill it must be a very serious problem since it survives so many things and can be passed on through water... soil... if a dog steps on it, and licks its paw... being clean is never a bad thing ! Good luck ! XOXO
