My only advise is to do a LOT of research on the Yorkie breed and other breeds, and training, living and exercise requirements, and find the breed that best matches your lifestyle, personality and living arrangement, before deciding which is right for you.

yes, do a lot of research on the breed and my only other advice is to research your breeder just as much. Avoid pet stores as they get their pups from commercial breeders/puppy mills where they mass breed sometimes 1500 dogs or more at a time. The moms and dads live their whole lives in small cages without vet care, or proper shelter and food, thus producing very sick puppies which are sold. Another nice option is to rescue. You can try Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder. Type in your zip code and the breed and it will pull up all the available Yorkies in your area. Some are a little older but there are also puppies available. And, if you are open to a Yorkie mixed with something else (They call them designer dogs) you will find plenty. The upside is the adoption fee runs around $400 and that includes the spay or neuter as well as shots and vetting. Good Luck. Elaine (mom to five rescues and one spoiled Christmas pup)

When you have decided on what breed of dog you would, like look at adopting. See if there if that breed has a rescue group in your area, foster for a couple of months then adopt a rescue pooch. All our "Kids" have been rescues and we have never regreted it. They have so much love to give for such a small price.

I agree with research, research, and research some more on the breed before you make up your mind. Good luck!

I am in the same boat as you. I did about two months worth or research and bought a couple of books on the breed as well before I made my final decision. Just make sure that after all of your research, you are personally prepared as well, as far as being able to care for the dog all of the time... and then make sure you find a reputable breeder (no pet shops!). I am bringing my new baby (and my first dog as well) home next month and I am so excited. You will learn a lot from the other members here at YT... feel free to ask a lot of questions! Good luck!

Yes. Please do research. Its a lot more to these dogs then just a cute face. Make sure this breed is best for you. There is great information on this website but also try doing a google search. I haven't received my baby yet and I am STILL finding out great information and tips. Hope this helps. And good luck!

If she is not a breeder, than how does she have puppies! I think if you are wanting a yorkie and money is an issue, you should hold of until you can afford all that a yorkie comes with. Good Luck!

Hello . I was just a little curious as to what you thought was the correct price for a yorkie? There are some *great* resources on this site for finding a GOOD breeder...and to me, that is *the* most important thing in terms of finding a healthy and happy pup. There are horribly bred pups who are extremely unhealthy being sold out there for 5-10k; there are also incredible pups out there being sold for what I consider a fair price for the work and commitment and knowledge it takes to breed a sound, healthy yorkie.

Hmmm...if she is not a breeder...how is she in possession of 1mth old pups? I will say very sadly that if you buy a yorkie at 1mth. old, there is a good chance you will lose the pup . The pup needs to be with the Mom until 12 weeks, at least, in my opinion.

If she is this willing to bargain...meaning, her pups are just about money...I would be very uncomfortable w/ her integrity and the health of her puppies. That's my two cents.

I want to show you some pictures...these are picture from the time I picked up the puppy to 4 months old. I paid 950.00 for this Yorkie. I bought him from a broker. I was so naive and had no idea about brokers. I have learned the hard way that short cuts only lead to problems. This puppy was from a breeder in Arkansas and the broker was here in the Houston area. I bought him in early 2008. I am now a member of our local club here in Houston. The Yorkshire Terrier Clubs of Greater Houston. I am now a board member and I am working hard to educate people....well people like me. I use these pictures to show why ethical and responsible breeding is very important. I have learned the hard way. My first intent was ---hey I'm going to get yorkies and breed and make money...why not. Sounded like a good idea. Wrong! C-sections are just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many health issues to consider when contemplating starting a breeding program. Yorkshire Terriers must have health testing done and must come from lines that are free of the many genetic issue that plague this breed. I forward these pictures to fellow members to use to show people what you can get by buying puppies from these unethical and cruel breeders. I hope I can use my error in judgement to help prevent others from making the same mistakes. We must stop the inhumane and cruel puppymills and brokers from profiting at the expense of the bitches that suffer for their profit. I getting angry just thing about it.

Okay, down off my soap box. Please wait until you can afford this puppy. Contact local shelters about rescues and call Yorkie rescue groups. There are often rescue Yorkies available in your price range. Here in Houston our club takes in rescues, we have them spayed or nuetered and we place them in suitable homes for 150.00. Maybe that is an option.

In my profile name you will see the name Jag. Jag is now nuetered and sitting on the lap of an older couple here in Houston. His pictures are below. I not going to call him ugly.....but he was just not well bred. This is hard for me to do, it is embarrassing. But I feel it is an important message.

The first two pics are his puppy pictures, the other a few months later.

Okay, a few more. It took me forever to get those ears to stay up. A whole roll of tape. The last picture is of a well bred yorkie at the same age, she was 1600.00. I'm not saying you have to pay 1600.00 to get a nice yorkie. Just be very careful and seek advice from your local club or the AKC.

I will have to agree with you. In my case I should have waited. My Poppy passed in June and I will never get over that hurt. I now try my hardest to get others to wait or buy from a responsible show breeder.
