| Question about Yorkie in heat... I have 2 Yorkies. My female is in heat and hase been receptive to my male for about 5 days and he has been constantly mounting her but as far as I can tell he has not penetrated. I find this odd considering he mounts her at least every couple minutes. She is still receptive to him but is now begining to growl a little bit. Is there anything I can do to ensure they tie? Any help would be great. |

| How big are your male and female and how old are they? Are you leaving them together all the time? How long ago did your female start her heat cycle? |

| The male is 4 years old and the female is 3 1/2. She has been receptive to him for about 5 days now. She is about 6 pounds and he is about 5 but he is taller than her. |

| Is the male proven? Has the female ever had pups? Not all males are cut out to be stud dogs. |

| The male is not proven. The female had 1 litter before but only had 1 puppy. |

| She might not be ready yet. try separating them for a couple of hours and then putting them together again. Some times the young males get over eager and wear themselves out. Or maybe she has a headache. I just went through this with my proven male, I separated them for a couple hours, then I sat on the floor and held the girl for him, and then he got serious. Mission accomplished. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I was told never to leave them together all the time, also if he is not proven, you have to help him by holding her for him and maybe guiding him. also I tried the 12th day after first blood with my maiden bitch and my stud and she not only got pregnant with a litter of 5 but whelped exactly 63 days after first tie, I mated them the 12th, the 14 and 17th day of her cycle. She was still a bit receptive after that those dates but I kept a diaper on her so they will not do it without my supervision, 3 times is good enogh.. also I known of pregnacies without a tie, and no pregnacy even with a tie. best of luck.. hugs, Carmen in nj |

| Thanks. For all the help. I will try to separate them for a little while. I was thinking that she might not be ready either but she is just as excited about it as he is. I'll keep you posted. Any other advice is welcome. Thanks |

| Just because she is flirting and sticking it in his face, does not mean she is ready. I have one dog that will stand for the male the entire heat cycle, she's a little hussy. And another that will stand only when she is ovulating. |

| Okay. So he will mount her but purposely not penetrate her if he knows she's not ready? So if that's the case and she has been swolen and receptive towards him for about 5-6 days what would you think would be the time frame for when she would be ready? Because all this humping with nothing happening is getting annoying. LOL |

It really depends when her cycle began, days 10 to 14 are the best, normally. he might need just a bit more encouragement if her scent isn't quite strong enough. you could try stimulating him a bit to see if that helps. Sometimes giving her a bath helps. One breeder says she takes the female and holds her out of his reachf, teasing him a bit. Is he vulva tilted towards the back? Does she move her tail to the side if you touch her above her tail. Dab her with a tissue, is it red or browinsh? | |

| I gave her a bath. We'll see if that changes anything. I don't think it's a strength or stamina problem because he can go at it all day if I let him. I hope it's just because she is not ovulating yet. |

| Perhaps you should consider progesterone testing? That will give you a good indication as to when she is 'ready.' |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Take your girl out of the house for the day. I know if mine think they are gone when we get back they are ready to go. I have to hold everyone of my females. If I don't the girl will wiggle around and pull out everytime. If he is taller you might have her stand on something to give her some height. I lay down and see where my male is hitting then adjust my female to that.
