| blood and puss It's 19 days after Fiona's delivery. The four babies are doing great. I just noticed blood and puss. I think it might be aninfection. I am heading over to the vet as soon as I post this. Already called They can fit me in in an hour. Problem is my vet hasn't been very good with advice in the past. I need to know all the test I have to tell them to run. any test you can think of. Becuase this vet knows her history I don't know if i want to change right now. |

| I'm confused. Is the blood and puss in the mom's teats? If so, it is probably matsitis which will need antibotics, and the puppies will need to stop nursing.

| At 19 days....she may have a case of pyrometria, get her in ASAP. If this is the case she'll most likely be spayed today.

| Please let us know how she is doing when you get back. I pray it's not pyrometria!

| Hello, sorry for making everyone wait so long and thank you so much for caring. there was just a little bit of bright red blood and white puss. She's not bleeding or anything. When we arrived at the vet there was no blood or puss so the vet took a cotton swap and stuck it in her for a sample. She vet said that in the blood she looked there wasn't a lot of white bood cells just a few here and there. she sayid that if fiona had an infection you would see them everywhere. She told me it was normal for a a female dog to have discharge for up to eight weeks. Then she sent me home with Clavamox. My little one seems fine. She's barking and running around and taking care of her little ones. |

Signs to look for. In a potpartum case, uterus in frequently enlarged and flaccid. The bitch is usually depressed and has an odorous vaginal discharge, which may be brown and thick. Frequently, a bitch with a vaginal infection will ignore her newborns. The "classic" signs of pyrometra are increased water intake and urination, depression, and lethargy. Fever may be present, especially in advanced cases. Sometimes a vaginal discharge is rpesent, sometimes not. Anytime a bitch is off after being in season, watch for these signs. The time varies, but obserbve roughly at two to three weeks. Usually it affects older bitches but can occur in younger ones. It can be very sneaky, the animal may become critical before the owner recognizes it is ill. Spaying is the best option. Waiting to treat with antibiotics can result in a ruptured uterus and a fatality.

| Is she nursing a litter? If so, then I'd wait until she has weaned the pups.

| I'd wait also. Just keep an eye on her now. After she has fully recovered from the birth I would spay her.

| I had a female that had pyometria while she was pregnant and she lost the litter. It happened very fast.I noticed blood dripping so I brought her to the emergency vet they did an ultrasound and said everything looked normal and that it wasn't blood it was diareah and sent me home with a $20 can of dog food.Well I got her home and we went to bed around 4 in the morning after being at the vet till then I woke up at 6 and she was barely breathing and on fire she miscarried one of her pups. I got her to her regular vet just in time she was barely hanging on.She had a puppy that died and was rotting inside of her that caused the infection. She had to be spayed and the pups had to be taken out.It should be taken very seriously I knew that there was something more not just diareah.I should have demanded that they do some more tests or check her over again. I could have lost her too.So please use your instinct if it seems like something is wrong still have another vet check her over to be sure. |
