Mother won't feed the baby because she's in labor, so she won't pay attention to it. Make sure the puppy is dry and kept warm. You can use the blow dryer on low and warm about 8 to 10 inches away from pup. Once dry put in in dry, warm place....if you have a heat lamp great, if not a heating pad under a box with warm bedding inside of it.

| Does the puppy feel cold to the touch? If so, then try putting it in a box with a heating pad on low, place this pad under a towel so as not to get too warm. But for now, I would try to stay calm as of now, since there's so much going on the mom might not want to feed for a while. How many pups is she having, is labor done right now? If not, then wait until labor is over and then see how mom handles the puppies. But just take a deep breath and wait this out. Hey Mary, didn't even see that you had responded. We both said kinda the same thing though. Last edited by starstella92; 11-07-2009 at 01:43 PM. |

| I also wanted to ask if the mom paid attention to it at all? Did she clean the baby(ies) when they were born? If so, then yes, more of a reason to just relax and know she should be just fine. Let us know how things work out when labor is complete. Good luck! |

| This is very normal, especially if this is a maiden bitch with her first litter. She's whelped the first one and the 2nd is coming fast behind....she's preocupied with her own pain. The best thing to do is dry the pup, administer a couple of drops of NutriDrops into the gums and keep it warm and away from mother until she's done with the 2nd whelp......Once she's done with the 2nd she should calm down enough to take care of both, that is unless she has another close behind. Then repeat the same procedure that you did with the first one......The main thing is to keep the pups safe....mother maybe jumping around.

| Make sure your room temperature is warm. I always place a small fleece blanket over the pup while it is nursing. Is mom licking the pups? Sometimes it will take a short time for them to start nursing. Also, once they have litter mates to snuggle with they will usually quiet down some. I will usually try to help a puppy attach in between pups being delivered. Good luck. |

| it's normal for the puppies to cry over and over right... well not the same one ... i guess they are jsut fighting for milk now. i'm sooo tired emotionally physically... how do i know if momma has enough milk??? i'm just letting her take care of the little ones i'm not stepping in at all. she knows what she's doing. she cleaned all the babies and did a great job. I was expecting five but we lost number four. she was beautiful. I feel like it's my fault, she was breathing then she stopped and we couldn't get her started again. thanks for all the advice |

| You need to intervene and make sure all the pups are able to latch on and nurse. Do you have the pups in a warm area, hopefully with a heating pad under them? Puppies will cry when they are hungry and when they are cold or when they get separated from their litter mates. Have you given the momma some food? Be sure she gets plenty of food and water. You may have to hand feed her for a few days. You can squeeze her teats and you should see some milk come out. I am sorry you lost the one pup. I know you did all you could to save it. |

| You can give mom some vanilla ice cream and make sure she has water. You must keep those babies warm or they will die,. Never try to feed a cold puppy. You need to have a warm spot for them to go to when mom is not in the bed. I give my nursing mothers a half boiled egg and a couple of tablespoons of cottage cheese twice a day. sometimes they won't eat their kibble, but they will always eat that. Also give her puppy food. |

Make sure the pups are kept in a warm, draft free location....away from family traffic. After the last pup is born....you'll have to monitor them for a couple of hours. Give mom: 12 oz can of goats milk, with equal parts of water, 1 tablespoon of Karo and 1 egg yolk, well beaten.....no egg white. Tomorrow you can begin giving her whelping pudding..... Oh, you'll need to get your momma to the vet in the Morning for an Oxytocin Shot......this will help her get rid of any dead tissue as well as increase milk production......

| Thank you for all your advice. This morning we rushed my little on to the Emergency vet. She had eclapsia. the vet said we caught it early so she should be fine. I feel like I was a bad mommy. Maybe I couldn't done more to prevent this. We are going to bottle feed the four little ones now on... If you have any advice on bottle feeding please let me know. |

By week 3 1/2 they'll be able to lap on their own. Make sure you burp.....Don't attempt to give them more than they'll take....they'll drop off the nipple when they've had enough I use Canned Goats Milk with equal parts of distilled water at room temperature. Goats Milk is the closests to Mother's Milk. You can put a onsie on her so that she can do the normal mommie duties, like diapering....but, since she won't be in there full time with them, you have to help her out....and do some diapering yourself. Did your vet give you something to help her milk dry up? You'll need to watch her too, so that her breasts won't explode....not a fun thing.

That is tooo smart about the onsie! I keep wrapping up Abby in a towel so her babies can't get to her. I am bottlefeeding 6 puppies at this time. Butterbean is my dog and he is the daddy. My mom'a dog abbey is the mom but we have had to take her to the vet twice now. We listened to a woman who said just give her extra calcuim and she can nurse. Don't trust that we almost lost her. This will be her last litter! I feel so much better knowing I am not the only one feeding babies around the clock! Good luck to all the other bottle moms out there! | |
