| C-section and nursing Darn! Another what if question! If a C-section is required can the mom still nurse? If so any special precautions? How do you protect the stitches from the pups? If not: how do you stop the pups from nursing and how do you protect the stitches from the pups? |

| I had a Shih-Tzu that had 2 c-sections. She got spayed on the last one. The main thing that I found is that you want to keep the puppies nails cut as this will irrate the mother's stiches. You will also want to take a dry hand towel and rub her with it as the milk in the teats makes the belly sweat right where the stitches are. She nursed her puppies just fine. She adapted and accepted her babies just fine, but it did take a while for the medication to wear off. Within 24 hours you couldn't even tell she had one done unless you went and looked at the incision. I hope that this helps. You may be worrying over nothing, which I hope you are.

| Thanks so much! That is good to hear! At times like this I tend to worry about everything so worrying about nothing is easy! |

| Here is a good website that can answers some of your questions: When a C-section is necessary, Whelping Puppies Many females will be slow to get their milk after a c-section so it is always wise to be prepared to bottle feed in case she does not get milk or is slow to get milk. I have heard of a few cases where the mom never got milk after a c-section. One of the biggest concerns with a c-section is that the mom might reject the pups. I have only had one female that required a c-section and that was many years ago. She had one big pup in her and she did well at raising her pup. |
