| has this ever happened to any breeder? I think this is a breeder's worse nightmare. My friend had a gorgeous litter and found great homes for the puppies, or so she thought. One of the puppies was taken to the emergency just 24 hours after being picked up and put to SLEEP unfortunately the new owner is nowhere of being cooperative on telling her what may have happened to this poor tiny puppy after he was picked up. He showed up at the emergency with seizures and the only thing they did was test sugar levels which were fine and give some oxygen. Then the owner decided to put the puppy to "sleep" to get him out of his misery. The owner told my friend she was going to do an autopsy but it turned out she declined the autopsy to determine the cause of death. Of course my friend's attorney will be looking into it soon. But i was wondering if any breeders here have had similar situations and if any advice can be given. I am trying to cheer my friend up. She adores her dogs and it is devastated. I never thought i would ever hear about something like this. I saw that gorgeous little puppy go out of her door and still can not believe it. of course the new owner appeared to be nicest person in the world by then. Now i do not know what to think of anyone anymore.Who could harm that perfect kissing baby? oh, i almost forgot, she thinks she has no responsibility since she only had the puppy for a day. Any inputs or sharing will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

| What type of contract does your friend have ?? Does she have a clause in it that states if put down then an autopsy must be preformed as to state the cause of the problem. Most contracts also state the breeder is to be notified before a pup is to be put down. Your friend does not know if the pup was dropped . Or if she let it jump out of her arms . She let the pup get a hold of some type of medicine.. A child squeezed it to hard , kicked it....etc. And if this woman refused to have one done, it sounds fishy, Does she know who the Vet is ?? Has she spoke to the Vet ?? I would be interested to hear what he had to say about what happened to the pup. And if it was necessary to put the pup down or if it was just a personal choice of the new owner. Most contracts state that when pups leave the breeder they become the sole responsibility of the new owner. Any medical bill incurred after the sale is to be paid by the new owner. Personally, I would NOT replace a pup with out having autopsy done to show cause of what happened to the pup. |

| That is so sad. Do you know how old the pup was and how much did the pup weigh? It sounds fishy to me. Shame on those people for not contacting the breeder right away. |

| How did your friend find out what they had done??? If she had a contract and it states they must contact her before putting down then I would take them to small claims court. We had this happen to a rescue we got in and nursed him back to health and he lived with my friend for 3 months. She thought she had adopted him out to a wonderful lady and within 1 month they had put the dog down. Our rescue contract states they cannot do this as we want to be involved...but the damage was already done. We had a lawyer issue a letter to shake her up but we knew we really couldn't do much of anything. We also notified all of the other rescues in Arizona so they could not get more dogs.

| I do not think she had so clear instructions on her contract. She is careful, meet people before, interview them all of that. She has contacted her attorney to see what can be done. But all is so fishy as you mentioned since the owner had the puppy put down and only went to the emergency after the puppy was very dull. My friend went there and had a long conversation with the emergency vet who gave her a list of at least 20 different causes of the puppy sickness. What made me so sad is i was there and saw the lady when she picked the puppy up. He gave me tons of kisses. He was 12 weeks old and had shots, healthy , eating well, never had a thing. i am not sure but about 2 to 2.5 pounds i guess. Not a teaCup for sure. I can not get over it. My friend is devastated.

| I have learned that for the safety of the little ones you have to have a mistrust of people because there are many people out there who have learned the correct answers. This pet owner is a prime example of this. How sad for your friend but now she needs to go back to the drawing board with her contract so she can protect any future pups.

As far as I know, I think it's Illegal to stop payment on a check. I normally will take a check as deposit and ask for cash when picked up. If they want to pay the remainer by check the check must clear before they can take possession of the pup. I know of a story where a lady bought 2 pom pups. She called the breeder a few days later and told her one would NOT play and the other would NOT eat. She brought the pups back along with her 3 small kids (that she failed to tell the breeder she had). The breeder told her the pups would have to be Vet check before she would refund any money to her. The lady told her she had some shopping to do and would be back later that day. The breeder took the pups to her Vet. One of the pups had a broken jaw Vet said the pup was kicked hard enough in the face to break it little jaw and she had to have it put down. The other was so dehydrated and worn out from over play. The lady showed back up thinking she was going to get a refund. The breeder told her she was NOT getting a refund. The lady said where is the pups and the breeder said one is resting because it is exhausted from being played with like a toy and the other is there on the table dead that had to be put down because of your kids kicking it in the jaw. The woman got all pissy because her kid were crying when they saw the dead pup. The breeder told her she wasn't getting the other pup either. Told her to get out of her house and never show her face around her again. I don't know if anything came after this but I don't think this lady would have won in a court after what she let her brat kids do to those poor little pups. Someone like this calls when kids are napping or out of the house. The breeder is not to blame. The blame go to the lady who lied and never taught her kids how to behave around animals. Which is sad. This is why some breeders will Not sell to those with kids PERIOD. And It hurt those who do have well behaved kids that have been taught to respect all living things. As, breeders you try to place your pup in the best possible home but sometimes it doesn't always work out that way. I've been cussed before because I refused to sell to someone after I found out they lied. I've known of other breeder who refused to place a pup with someone and that person would get someone else to try to purchase the dog for them. Checking out homes would be fine if the home is close enough to you but there are time when the dog goes to another state and checking out the home is just not possible. At those times you just have to go with your gut feeling.

I cannot believe that your friend took a check? The dog that was taken to the ER might not have even been the same puppy. It coluld have been a puppy this woman bought from somewhere else, that got sick and she thought of this way to get a free replacement. I neve take checks for final payment, just for deposit.

I recently talked to a breeder who bred greyhounds. One of her puppies was turned over to a shelter a molnth after she sold it. they paid $600 for the dog than gave it to the shelter. I am now considering microchipping my puppies. Last edited by JeanieK; 10-18-2009 at 12:34 PM.

| This thread is making me feel ill...too sad for me today! Now I know why I'm keeping both my puppies. I poured blood, sweat, and tears over those two and I would die if someone kicked one and broke its jaw. I don't know how anyone can bear it if the pups that they bred are abused.
