| Size Question. Hi. I'm placing my question under the breeder section in hopes some of you experienced breeders can help me out. I was placed with a little boy and at the time of placement was told she thought he would not reach over 4lbs. full grown. He is now 7 weeks and weighing over 2 lbs. It's a difficult situation. We have the full brother to this little guy. We rescued him last year and then tracked down the breeder who turned out to be a real nice lady who was very upset that he did not end up in the home she thought she sold him to. Anyway, short of the story is this is the mom's last litter and she offered me the smallest male which was offered to cheap enough to be considered a gift. And, she is in NC and will be bringing him to me free of charge to NJ. My concern is that this guy who we thought would be 4 lbs. will now end up being a teapot. I don't want to hurt anyone and I don't want to sound ungreatful, but my heart is with a smaller Yorkie. I'd be fine even if he turned out to be 6 lbs. or so but I have to be honest and say I'd be very disappointed should he turn out to be a larger Yorkie. Can any of you experienced breeders tell me what your guess would be with regard to size? Thanks. Elaine |

| The normal rule of thumb for yorkie size is to triple their weight at 8 wks of age or double it at 12 wks of age. This is only an average estimate and the weights can vary from this rule. |

| Some pups at that age still have a lot of puppy fat so tripling the weight can be deceiving. It is really hard to predict size at that age, at least that is my experience. |

So true! I placed a pup who at 8 weeks was on track to be at least 6 lbs. Mom was 5 and 1/2 lbs, dad was 6 lbs. At 8 months of age...this puppy is only 3 1/2 lbs. I highly doubt she will ever get to 6 lbs.

| As an experienced breeder; impossible to guesstimate the size a yorkie will be as an adult. So much depends on the lines this pup comes from. I've had yorkies that at 8 weeks are 3 pounds, grow very fast as pups then stop and adult weight is 5 pounds. Others that have been small and then have growth spurts and turn out on to be on the larger size. Bone density factors in alot. Pups at a young age have a lot of milk fat..... I will say in my line 2 pounds at 8 weeks is pretty average. The only way you can be sure of a pups size is to purchase it when it's older at approximately 7 to 8 months of age.

| My new girl Luna was 1 1/2lb at 8 weeks, and now at 20 weeks she is just under 5lbs, and pretty lanky so I am sure she will fill out quite a bit. Her growth surprised everyone. Her brother is barely 3lbs. You can just never tell.

| Thanks Guys. I'm all settled down tonight and whatever he is he is. Initially I was a little down that he would be bigger but as long as he's healthy and happy and my crew and him all get all then really that's what it's all about. She sent me a new pic. of him today and I just lit up. He is so angelic. His sister had been sold and the person backed out due to her schedule. Both breeder and buyer agreed it would not be suitable. I'm almost temped to take her with him. She's adorable. She's charting to be around 3.5 - 4 lbs. but like you said you can never really be sure. Cosmo was the tiniest male and this little one was the tiniest female. Anyway, thanks again for the input. and if he follows after all of the others he will be close to 4 lbs. so i would guess on the little one that you have seen is gonna be over the standard weight. if my heart was set on a smaller baby by all means wait until you find one even though i know you would love this one that you seen wait and make yourself happy with what you really want
