| Please Help: deaf dog I possibly have a deaf female yorkie. i purchased her about 5 1/2 months ago at 8 weeks. she is gorgeous and fits the standard in everyway except with her soft silk coat and slightly uneven topline. i would love to breed her. she has gorgeous red and steelblue coloring coming through her coat already at 7 months. she only hears certain tones, unable to housebreak because of it. my vet says it is not hereditary. is it my breeders fault? What should i do? She has outstanding lines. Please email me at usnavyboy@hotmail.com with any and al advice that any of you shall have. Daisy May means alot to me and my line. She is really beneficial to my program. Her pedigree is outstanding. My breeder has never had this problem before. She is devestated over this. She is even considering redoing her lines if this turns out to be genetics. Any advice? |

Personally, I wouldn't breed her because of the topline issue and the dog being deaf. I'd hate to find out the hard way that the hearing issue is genetic. Possibly you could do some genetic testing before hand, but I dont know how she'd do with pups if she cant hear them...

Deafness in Dogs & Cats You can google 'deafness in dogs' and read much more information. Welcome to Yorkie Talk. While I am sure your little girl is beautiful, it might not be in her best interest to breed her. While there is no perfect yorkie and a slightly weak topline can be corrected with proper breeding, I would be very concerned about the deafness. A momma yorkie depends on her hearing to know when her babies are crying. Pups cry when they are hungry or when they are cold or when they need to potty and if a momma accidentally lays on a pup she can hear the pup cry and knows to get off of them. If the momma can't hear the pups then the pups might get neglected. My recommendation would be to have further testing done and try to determine the extent and cause of the deafness. Do you think she has been deaf since birth? As for the breeder of your pup, if the breeder sold the pup at 8 weeks then that just makes me think your breeder is not as knowledgeable about yorkies as she should be and perhaps you should seek help from someone more knowledgeable. I do hope you keep us posted on how your little girl does.

| She only hears certain tones. she hears those squecky toys when she plays with them. the Vet is thrown for a loop over that. the dog whistle she hears fine as well. My vet say that there is a possibility of her being undeveloped or as maturing as she should be. Her hearing for the most part is up in the air. both me and my vet have never heard of yorkies being deaf before. The reason why i want her in my lines is because her color fits the standard perfectly. The gold is a bit dark than from what i have been used to seeing though, but its a deep rich gold. My lines are throwing the silver blue instead of the dark steel blue. my male is a steel blue but his mother was a silver and red. his sire was a black and gold. My male has a dead level topline, so i know that her slightly uneven topline will be breed out . I am hoping that if her hearing gets better, and if she is breedible, the resulting puppies for the most part would be a steel blue and a deep rich gold. |

| Good news. took her to another vet. her ears are just underdeveloped. the fact that she is able to hear the high tones is a good thing and she hears my mother's newborn pups as well. She is just still developing. what can i sy? her breeder thought she was ready to go at 6 weeks!!!! i will fix her though |

| Thanks for the update. That is good news. Hopefully her hearing will continue to improve. Spaying her is a good decision. |
