Default I hope you can help, this is a bit long

My little one’s weight is 6lbs I never wanted to breed her. She was supposed to get spayed in October. I do not know anything about breeding or pregnancy, etc. She had an encounter with an eight pound Chihuahua. My little one was outside and I started to run to her I didn’t even think anything happened He wasn’t even really humping her hard then he just got off her and they were just standing butt to butt. When I reached her I freaked out they were stuck together. I called the emergency vet! They told me the dogs would correct themselves. All I could think about was omg I have to rush them to the ER.
So, after acting like an idiot on the phone and yelling at the Chihuahua’s owner (even though now when I think about it it’s my fault) while waiting for the little ones to correct themselves I googled what on earth happened. I found out that the world calls it a tie.
I’ve been trying to research online what to do about this situation. I grabbed a copy of the complete guide to dog breeding by Dan Rice. I don’t know if she’s pregnant, but I don’t want to be unprepared. Should I go to the vet right now, even though they can’t tell if she is pregnant or not? I read online that once we do the x rays the vet can figure out how big the babies are and if she can give birth to the puppies.
I am so scared. I don’t know what to do. I love my little one more than anything. I didn’t want puppies. But I WILL take responsibility for what happened. I just need to know if what I am doing is correct. I started a calendar and noted what day the tie happened on. I counted the days and I put down the ultrasound dates and the x-ray dates. I understand that there is a larger risk for a c-section because the male was bigger than she is. I am prepared to pay for all the medical care. I don’t want to just sit here and read. I feel like there has to be more that I can do to prepare myself. I know there will be more bumps on the road ahead. Please doesn’t lecture, I already understand my horrible display of irresponsible dog ownership. I know that I sound extremely naive about everything, but that’s because I am. I love my little one; I just want to do everything that’s in my power for the best possible outcome.

sounds like you are on the right track
i dont know how you feel about it but they can still do the spay and abort any possible pups..depending how you feel on that subject....if you are concerned about complications that would be the best route to insure she would be safe

i personally would not be concerned with a 2lb difference

but if i didnt want the results of this mistake and i was already having her fixed...i would do the spay and abort any pups..there is already enough "mistakes" out there looking for homes

but i speak for my self that no matter what route you choose im available for questions and will be happy to help in any way i can

I am rather new to this as well....someone will correct me if I say something wrong....

You won't be able to tell if she is pregnant for at least 4 weeks...if not 5. Your vet can feel for "bumps" at that time but an xray (there is a good week for this which I have yet to learn of) at which he should be able to tell you how many are in there. At some point he should be able to give you advice on whether or not she can deliver them based on size. The weight difference doesn't seem like alot so I don't know if that's a huge issue.....but one of the long time breeders should be able to give opinion on that.

THere is ALOT of reading to do in preparing for pregnancy and whelping (delivery). You will need to ask alot of questions in order to feel prepared.

I hope all goes well for you and your dog. Don't be too hard on yourself....accidents do happen. And...if she doesn't end up pregnant and you don't want puppies....book her an appt at the vet

Good luck!!!

Don't freak out. There is not that much size difference. The male does not have to be smaller.

When you take her to the vet he can evaluate her and determine if she should be able to deliver them naturally. The x rays will also help to determine the size of the puppies. I would not waste money on an ultra sound.

If she was that willing and they tied that quickly, chances Are she is pregnnt.

When my taffy got pregnant I knew nothing about breeding, or whelping, since we were told that she was fixed when we adopted her from the rescue, I found a lot of valuable information at Debbie Jensen's site.. also I asked a breeder that I met thru my son to be my mentor he happend to live close to me, so I went and witness one of his beagle girl whelped and learned a lot..
here's the link to Debbie's site..

I am sorry your girl got accidentally bred. How long ago did this occur? If it just happened withing the last week or so then it is not too late to have her spayed. If you are in a position to be with her when she has her pups and give all the proper care to her and her babies then I see no reason she cannot have pups as long as she is in good health. If you are working and are not in a position to take time off to help her deliver and spend 12 weeks caring for her and her pups then you might consider having her spayed. Whatever you decide I pray everything works out well.

Default No lecture here...............

..........you've come here for support and that's what you'll get from me. What's done is done.....accidents do happen, so don't beat yourself up about it. It sounds very responsible & you are prepared to do whatever you must for a safe whelp. That's what matters now.
At 6 lbs, your girl is a nice sized weight for whelping (as yorkies go) though it's not just the weight but also how she is built that matters. Though we like the males to be smaller, here to it's more the size of the puppies the studs line (parents, grand-parents, etc.) is known for throwing that matters. I assume you don't & won't know that; this is where an x-ray will be a great help. An ultra-sound is not necessary; at about 25-28 days from breeding take her to your vet; they should be able to feel for small lumps in the abdomen to confirm pregnancy. I don't believe a count is accurate from this. My female had just one puppy four weeks ago; when I took her in to see if she was PG, the vet could not feel any lump to confirm pregnancy. My "need to know" was my only reason for doing an ultra-sound & it did show the one puppy. The x-ray is done about 1 week before her due date. It is awesome to see the puppy heads & spines. Through the x-ray the vet can give you a good indication on her ability to whelp naturally and a fairly accurate count of pups (though there have been known to be surprise pups that were hiding in the x-ray). The Debbie Jensen site is a favorite of mine and there are many others on the web; just google "canine whelping, or yorkie whelping" & you'll get lots to look at. Read, read, and read some more.
I wish you and your girl the best outcome. Please keep us posted on her progress & know that we are here to help however we can. Good luck to you!

My little one tied on the 8th of sept. My first reaction was to go ahead and get her spay and to just make the problem go away. I honestly didn’t want to give up so much time to raising puppies. But, when time came to committee to the spay I couldn’t do it. I broke down knowing there may be little ones growing inside of her. So, I made the choice to go forward and educate myself on what to expect. I’ve already decided that no matter how many puppies she has I’m keeping them all. I don’t know if it’s realistic but, there is no way I will be able to part with them after 12 weeks of raising them.

I do work, my job is really flexible. I do not know a single person who breeds dogs nor do I know a vet or vet tech personally, but the little ones whole family (daddy and grandma, etc) are all willing to help incase we do end up needing to bottle feed.

So, is having the vets feel for the puppies safe??? If it is I’ll change my calendar and Fiona will go in for that and if they do not feel a puppy just to be sure I’ll do the ultrasound then the x ray? If they feel a puppy I’ll skip the ultrasound and just do the x ray.

Thank you so much for the advice and the website!!!

My vet told me there is a blood test that they can do to confirm pregnancy. I am not sure but I think he said it could be done at 21 days after breeding.

Aww, I understand......I don't think I could abort a pregnancy either. As long as you are responsible in keeping &caring for and/or finding the pups good homes, your decision is fine. It sounds like you have a great support group in your family.
Vet palpitation IMO is safe; others may disagree but it boils down to personal opinions/preference. I've had two litters so far; the first one I had a pretty good idea myself that my female was PG by the time I took her in for palpitation, but wanted the confirmation for my peace of mind. Even with the litter of one we just had, I suspected that she was PG, but with only one pup, the obvious belly change was not quite there for me to be sure. Definitely skip the ultrasound if pups are felt........if you see changes in her behavior, eating habits, and/or her belly/nipples.......those would be probable signs of a pregnancy and you could even skip palpitation. But of course to be absolutely certain, a trip to the vet is in order. We're here for any questions and concerns along the way!
Here's another good website to check out. Scroll down to the bottom for more helpful links on the site from breeding through weaning and everything in between.

It is called Witness-Relaxin and it's debatable whether it is accurate or not. A lot of breeders swear by it but its expensive.

Good luck with your little girl, you have done the right thing by researching and coming here for advice.

Well, if she is pregnant it's day 15 which I know is still super early, but she's showing some signs already. So, even if she's not pregnant we'll have to go through a false one I'm sure. She's usually very independent and fiesty. She've been very very lovey dovey and she's been eating a lot. She's never finished what she's suppose to finish when we give her food in the mornings. She's also stopped going down to the basement. She still jumps up on the couches and beds. We've also decided for her to go in to get a palpation done on the 5th of October, day 27.

Questions: It's still early but should I start feeding her more? When should I start to worry about rough play?

Many years ago, I had a dalmation that was accidentally bred. I had every intention of having her spayed, and no intention of having a litter of mix-breed pups from her. I went through with the spay, and she was fine. I never actually knew if pregnancy resulted from the tie. So, I do know that accidents happen.
I'm glad your little girl is okay, and I commend you for educating yourself about the whole situation.
Keep us updated as to how she's doing, and if she is actually pregnant. And welcome to YT.

How old is your girl? I would make sure you are feeding a high quality food and be ready to switch her to puppy food. Make sure she has plenty of water, etc.
