Angry This makes me angry...

I always check my local classified for Yorkies, just a hobby, I don't need any more yet. But I ran across this ad this morning...

AKC Yorkie Pups
5 wks., ready 9/25. Parents on site, 1st shots and wormed. "1" male and "1" female. $500 each. Call 704-xxx-xxxx...

This means that they will only 7 weeks old when they go to their new homes. Do breeders not care anymore?

I just don't understand.

Yeah....that's why I tend to not even "look" in the paper. It generally only ends up ticking me off.

Default Don't look at me.

I'm looking for a cocker spaniel or yorkie pup for a friend who wants to do rally obebinace classes and we can't find a breeder with puppies over 8 weeks old. Local papers or puppyfinder/kijji/hoobly/petfinder even from breeders who ship and that's not even legal let alone moral. Not all of them were what I consider a mill. One was a cocker show breeder who is apart of the American Cocker Spanial Club. Ecomony is bad enough that some people just don't care. How can you sell a small breed dog with only it's first 5 way shot at 6 weeks old and SHIP IT! Don't start me on health clearences.

You have to understand that there is a real world out there beyond YT and not everyone knows the best age to sell a yorkie. For years I sold my pups at 6 to 7 weeks and never had a problem. I feel bad now that I did it for so many years but I was just doing what everyone else did at the time. The last few years I have been keeping pups until they are about 12 weeks old and I truly believe it is much easier on the pups and I really enjoy watching them grow up.

I am sure these breeders do care but they are just uneducated, like I was, as to what is the best age to sell pups. I think YT has been a valuable learning tool for many of us. All we can do it continue to educate people and if you come across someone selling young pups then mention to them the importance of keeping the puppies until they are older. We can't change the world overnight but we can try little by little.

One of the problems out there is the puppy buyers. Many puppy buyers want a 7 or 8 week old pup so they can raise it their self. They don't understand that it is better to buy a older pup that is already weaned and socialized. They act like a 12 week old pup is a grown dog.

I too browse my paper as well as puppy sites online. I found one yesterday on NextDayPets.com where a lady was selling a puppy for $5,000.00. She claimed that it weighed 0.9 oz. How is that even possible for a puppy that is 10 weeks old? I e-mailed her asking her if it was an error so we'll see. She also claimed that it would be under 2 lbs.

Most of the puppies I saw on there were going to be 2-3 lbs and selling for $1,000 and the bigger puppies 4-9 lbs were around $500. It just makes me mad about what some breeders are doing to this breed. Their just trying to make the smallest babies to get the biggest bucks.

I understand what you mean, however, I did come across this breeder that was selling a puppy that was 6 weeks old. I tried to tell her that she needed to stay with her mom, and she looked right at me and said if you don't want her, then someone else will. I looked at the puppy, it's gums were white as snow. I gave the money to the lady, and took the puppy. I rushed straight over to the grocery store for karo syrup. I considered it a rescue. Ellie is like a mother to her and is teaching her the right thing to do. So it worked out good for us. However, if someone with no knowledge would have purchased this puppy, it would for sure had died on them. She had fleas really bad too. Now she's healthy and doing well.

That's the main reason why I get so angry. Many breeders do know that it's wrong, and they just want the money.

Awww, that was so sweet of you to save that baby. I am glad she is doing well. How old is she now. I totally agree with you that some people just won't listen. When I see it now I just shake my head and think if they only knew. It really bothers me when I see breeders vaccinating their pups at such a young age, I used to do that too. When I think back, I am doing things a lot different now than I did 12 years ago. I guess that is why I am a little more understanding and tolerant of people that aren't doing everything the way we think they should. We all make mistakes, unless you were fortunate enough to start out on the right foot and have a good mentor.

She will be 12 weeks old on Monday. She's doing a lot better now. I am calling her Izzy. She has a great attitude and fits right in with the family.

I think the main thing is that people just don't know what really is in the best interest of the puppy. We keep our pups 10-12 weeks min and I have had people say no way that is crazy we want the puppy at 8 weeks MAX!! After speaking with them - some will understand and now they know while others just don't care and just want the pup.

My vet( I'm not going there anymore trying to find a new one) told me that my pups were ready to go at 8 weeks, I'm not a breeder that was an accident and I'm not planning to breed again, she also told me that docking the tails at 2 weeks was ok,????! My point is, to people like me, ignorats in this matters, vet opinion count a lot, some of us don't have the best, thank god for yt, I have learned a lot

I totally understand what you mean about vets. I had one tell me that it was alright for a 2lb yorkie to get pregnant. I couldn't believe what they were telling me. They also said that it was alright to have the puppy leave at 6 weeks. Needless to say, I have found a new vet. He and & see eye to eye on everything. He's even commented on how much I know. I told him that I owe all to YT.

Those poor babies. I hope they find loving, caring, and safe homes.
