Default akc registration

I have a new pup that has AKC registered parents. Is there any point in paying for AKC papers for the pup if he is only going to be a pet?

it is a personal choice. AKC papers are always important to me regardless of what I plan for the puppy. If it truly does not matter, then no you don't need them. But there might come a day when you wish you had them.

I certanily don't mind paying the money for the papers but if the dog is nutered what circumstances can you think of that the papers would come in handy? Not trying to be smart just wondering?

I register my babies no matter what. I frame their registration certificates and hang them on the wall. It's their family tree, and when you register them they are forever recorded in history. AKC has many other benefits to registering them, including a complimentary vet appointment, and tons of information for you, and by registering you are helping support many great programs and
I am pasting some of them here, but you can view them all at www.akc.org.

AKC registration benefits. When new puppy owners register their puppy with the AKC, they will receive more than $100 in registration benefits! Frameable AKC Registration Certificate
Free introductory vet office visit, available with participating veterinarians in the AKC Veterinary Network
Complimentary 60-Day Trial AKC Pet Healthcare Plan*, at absolutely no cost or obligation to the owner. Information will be provided soon after registration.
Free AKC New Puppy Handbook
Reduced rates for pet lost-and-found recovery service enrollment
* Administered by PetPartners, Inc. Underwritten by Markel Insurance Company, 4600 Cox Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060, rated A "Excellent" by A.M. Best Company. Contact Pet Partners, Inc. for terms and conditions. Eligibility restrictions apply. Available to US residents excluding New York. Must be activated within 28 days of AKC Registration Certificate Issued date.
Importance of AKC registration. Registering with AKC is good for owners and good for dogs. As a not-for-profit registry, AKC’s commitment is to canine health, breeder rights, and promoting responsible dog ownership. AKC funds a wide array of activities and initiatives dedicated to our achieving our mission, including: AKC Canine Health Foundation research to treat and cure dog-related diseases
Canine legislation initiatives that help protect breeder rights
K-9 search and rescue programs
Inspections to monitor care and conditions at kennels across the country
Canine DNA profiling that ensures reliable registration records
Education to encourage responsible dog ownership

Additionally, AKC sanctions more than 20,000 competitive dog events each year and provides support for AKC affiliates and programs, including AKC Companion Animal Recovery, AKC Canine Good Citizen®, AKC Veterinary Network, AKC Library, AKC Museum of the Dog and much more!

Hope this is helpful. Sorry so long.

I would think Identify the dog is yours. I have sent all mine in, whether or not I plan to breed or not. Just to prove they are mine. My dachshund is AKC, 10 years old, and spayed, but I have her papers. It's a personal choice.

I agree with Dee. I like to have them as well. but if you NEVER plan to show, breed, and they are a pet only...there really isn't a "need"...only if your prefer them.

Congrats on the new addition!

It's only $20.00, and you are helping to support the best registry we have. I always encourage people to register their dogs if they are eligible. The AKC, while not perfect, is trying to rid itself of puppy mill breeders, and it is the only registry that does routine unannounced inspections. Your $20.00 supports this as well as other programs. Registering your dog, helps keep breeders honest, many people have been told that their dogs was AKC eligible, and yet, when they tried to register they found out that this wasn't the case. If a breeder is discouraging you from registering, or says it costs hundreds of dollars, run the other way. A breeder only has to admit to breeding those dogs that are registered, and a breeder might have more inspections if the truer numbers of dogs they were producing were known, they also might be required to do DNA testing, and some breeders wouldn't want this for obvious reasons. The registry is a good check and balance between breeder and buyer.

I would like to see more pet owners becoming members of the AKC rather than just breeders. Pet owners are often more concerned about certain problems than either breeders or animal rights groups. Pet owners really love dogs, and love having pets, not all breeders love dogs, and not all animal rights groups think we should have pets. In the future, with DNA testing, I'm hopeful we will learn more about genetic diseases because we will have a great record of dogs' ancestries. They are already doing this with human populations with areas known to be closely related, but with dogs we even have a better knowledge of the ancestries than we do humans, and in a decade we can produce many generations. Overall, when you support the AKC, you are supporting good breeding practices, plus, you get a cute little tag!

Shoot I paid 35$ for our Bull terrier's registry. But it's not a big deal, I wonder why it cost me 35 though.

I think it is nice to support the AKC and to have that little bit of info on your dog. I like to be able to see the pedigree just for fun.

I am certainly glad to support the akc. I guess I didn't think of all these reasons. Guess that's why I joined yorkie talk so I could learn all the wonderful knowledge that this fourm and it's people have and are willing to share with others. You are all gracious to take the time to share and I appreciate all of you. I will send in my support thanks to all of you.

Twenty dollars is the cost of registration, you can also opt for other things such as lifetime lost and found, which I did, and that's an additional $15.00. Joey's breeder gave me the pedigree information, but if your breeder doesn't do that, it would cost an extra $19.00, so you probably got registration, and pedigree information, for $39.00. Here is the fee schedule. https://www.akc.org/reg/fee_schedule.cfm Also, this is a one time fee, not yearly.

Thank you, Honeykisses, FLDebra and Nancy1999!! Those are all the reasons that I registered Toto! The AKC is prestigeous and I believe that they are trying to improve. I believe that is says a lot about Toto's bloodline and the dedication that Ava has had in 30+ years of working to perfect that bloodline! I am very proud of my little - TyAva's Out of Oz, Toto and all the champions in her bloodline. I fully believe that her ancestors wouldn't have been champions had they not been some of the best representation of the breed!! Thanks again, ladies!
