| According to Dr. Center, who developed the bile acids test, it's best to wait until at least 16 weeks with 18-20 weeks preferred. The organs just aren't developed enough before then. |

| hmmm. I called my vet and they called the lab because they weren't sure. The lab said they can do it at any agebut there is just theproblem of them becoming hypoglosimic.. They said they should be o.k. at 8 weeks to do... I was hoping to do them at 12-13 weeks. Would it be different views because I am in Canada? |

It sounds like your vet doesn't realize that you don't have to fast dogs before the test. Here is some great information from Dr. Center: PSVA and MVD Research Summary

| my vet still makes them fast also. remember one thing, they take about three cc's blood to do this test. We had a pup die on here last year from blood depletion after having this test. The pup was plenty old enough but weighed less than two pounds best I remember. |

the necropsy goes on to explain that because of his size and the amout of blood taken little teaser's system could not fight it that his blood volume was not to standard's he was 12% off. One thing Rose and I both learned is that neither of us will EVER bile acid test a pup this small and this young again just to please people that think we are bad breeders if we don't test our puppies..

| Dr. Tobias told me that it isn't really accurate until the puppies are around 10 months of age.

I think it is important to get the correct information out there, though, and not frighten breeders unnecessarily. According to necropsy, the puppy died from a bacterial infection. A 12 hour fast and a blood draw on a sick twelve week old puppy could certainly have weakened him and made the infection worse, though. BAT tests on healthy puppies over 15 weeks as Dr. Center's protocol calls for are safe. Fasting is not necessary. The test is done with paired samples around meals.
