| Generations between yorkies We have got 2 yorkies, one is Cleo who is year old, and we have just got our new puppy, Max who is about 10 weeks old. Obviously not for some time, but we would like to breed them at some point and I have a question about generations, etc. We have a 5 generation pedigree for each dog and Cleo's dad is Max's mum's dad. There are also similarities such as Cleo's dad's dad is Max's dad's dad, etc. What is the norm for breeding? Could we breed quality pedigrees from these 2 or would that not be advised? Thanks

| It would be considered line breeding. Of course there is much more to consider than just the pedigree. You need to know the strengths and the faults of all the dogs involved. It sounds like they are both closely line bred so no one can say if it would be a good breeding without really knowing the dogs involved. Sometimes line breeding can produce excellent results but it can also bring out lots of problems. You still have plenty of time to study the yorkie standard and find someone that is very familiar with breeding that could look at your dogs and give you an honest opinion. You should also consult with the breeder you got your pups from because they would be the most familiar with the ancestors of your dogs. |

| Line breeding can be very tricky... Your best bet is go back to the breeder who bred them and get a lot of advice from them... actually they would be the best advisers for you in this question, supposed they do know theis dogs and their lines well. XOXO

| Thanks for the replies so far. The only problem with that is that we don't know the breeder for Cleo as we had her at a year old from someone else. We have noticed that Max's mum's mum is Max's dad's mum's mum so this is is a similar situation. We will try to find the breeder and ask them if that's best.

| Hummmm... Even if you do not know them ... it does not mean they would not be willing to talk to you. As long as you have the open registration on the dogs and breeders have allowed it they should be willing to give you advise and the best would be to try reach both breeders and discuss with them your plans??? I am sure after the first conversation you will be able to tell if they know their lines and so forth... Good luck !

| The only problem with this is that you are depending on the breeder of your pup to be a knowledgeable breeder and be honest. Many breeders do not want to discuss the faults of their dogs or discuss breeding issues they have within their breeding program. Of course many hobby breeders do not even understand proper conformation, they are just breeding for pretty pet quality dogs. That is why even if you are not able to show but are interested in breeding the best yorkies possible, you should attend some shows and really get acquainted with what a proper yorkie should look like. To the OP: your Cleo is a pretty girl. Best of luck to you. |
